I acquired a 1938 Silver King three wheel tractor.I also acquired a service manual for a 1942 which calls for the use of a "special fram filter" which is "standard" on all Silver Kings. In the process of basic servicing, I found out that the previous owner had been running it without a filter which is not something I intend to do. If anyone can provide advice on what filter to use, it would be most appreciated. Thanks
Jim

Just to make things more complicated:
Fan Belt catalog: 35-38, models R-38, R-44 : Herc IXB or DRXC;
Tractor Book (Wendells/I&T histories): 35-39 Mod R66 has Herc IXB, 37-39 Mod SR38 has either Herc IXA or IXB; 37-39 Mod R44 has Herc IXB;
Ign and bearing catalogs don't list 38 Silver King or it'd probably be more confusing (with parts catalogs it's "the more the merrier"!)
All of which, of course, might be void if someone's swapped engines...

Larry has it right. That's going to be a Hecules engine in that unit you have. Nothing that you shouldn't be able to match up at the local auto parts store. Hercules made lots of engines, and a filter for yours shouldn't be hard to find.

Chrysler engine, right?

Are you looking for just the replacement bypass filter element, or is the whole filter cannister missing? If you have the cannister, are there any numbers on it? Do you have an olf filter element?

If the whole cannister is missing, is originality important?

If not, and you want the benefits of getting the bypass filter setup working again, you could install a WIX BYPASS filter head, and spin-on BYPASS filter element:

Third Party Image

I have a Chrysler Industrial engine, and a Co-op tractor with a Chrysler engine, and could send you photos of the filter setup, if that would help.

The tractor was built by the Fait-Root-Heath Co. of Plymouth, Ohio.

At one point they called the tractors Plymouth tractors but there was a spat with Chrysler over the nane so they sold the Plymouth name to Chrysler for $1.

Its their own design and engine. The cannister is there and in good condition and contains lettering "Model JC". I require a filter element reference. Originality is important as I hope to show it. The canister has a centre post which the cap screws into.

Thanks for your help

Jim
