Hey Allan I tried the 966 again and there is no smoke at all when the miss starts at 1200rpm. Give her a little throttle and she clears up. What ya think just ain't broke in yet??? I also sent ya my address if ya got it. hope i did it right. If ya get a chance send yours to my lycos mail.

Thanks Greg

The engine oil press. operated intervance in the AMB pumps on earlier 66 series will have a loud clatter @ run uneven at about 1200 +-. Will not hurt anything. Later pumps had an updated intervance to eliminate this problem. Not all earlier tractors will do this & usually not all the time on those that make the noise.

Well it sounds to me like it has a flutter in the pump . Could be caused by the pump head having a bad spot or a bushing on a shaft and allowen the it to bounce . Could be in the govener in the pump . Since i can't hear what it is doing and can not feel the pulse of the pump just given ya the could be's

The pump was new when the engine was done. I know the mechanic who did it was a 30yr vet from IH. I may have to contact him to see whats up. I do appreciate your help for me.

Greg,

Are you sure you're just not hearin' that clatter, batter, clankity thing that those 400 engines do from time to time?

Kinda hard to imagine it "missing" with no white smoke to speak of.

Listen to the Vet; he's a killer of an IH mech.

Allan

I'll listen to anything you wisdom guys have to say. I'm MR new to the diesels had gassers all my life so its new world for me guys. It does sound like a miss though and right around the 1200 mark. As you slowly move the throttle up at about 1400 she starts to go away. I run about 1800 to 2000 with the old MF#12 baler and she runs as smooth as silk and doesn't miss a beat. Oh and this thing sips fuel which surprises me. I use about 1 1/2 gal of fuel an hour which is the same on my ford 4000 gasser. What a sweetheart!!!

Greg,

I have no idea; I'm just a broken down old meat-head who happens to like red tractors.

However, I think Ted in his post above has hit the nail square on the head. You're listenin' to that typical IH "rappin, flutterin'" sound that they all do from time to time.

If it pulls okay under a load and ya can stand that insistant, normal, loud, IH yammerin' noise, ignore that flutter and enjoy yer tractor. :>)

I wish my 966 would only use about a gallon and a half. Mines more like 7 gallons pulling a load and about 3 not doing anything.
