I live in upstate N.Y. and for about the last month all of our equipment has been running poor. All of aur tractods are gassers, and rarely have a problem, but latley the gas is garbage. Two carbs developed Huge leaks, the haven"t had a bit of trouble in over 15 years each. The only things that seam O.K. are my old Super hH,C,and A!! Can only guess this new stuff is more like distilate. Anyone else out there having simmilar issues? Mike

have been using the ethanol blend for 25yrs here in IOWA in my Bs and As with no problems have two that have over a 1000 mi of tractor rides dont even drain in the winter or use any additives. 89 is the rating on the pumps.

Gene there are places in the country that have never saw alcohol in gas so they will be having some of the same problems some of us have already had with the stuff .

Are you now getting alcohol instead of MTBE if so the alcohol will exploit every weak part of the fuel system

If diesel is getting mixed in your gas it all won't combust during combustion and you will see smoking and find the oil level going up as the unburnt diesel goes past the rings into the oil.

Depends on what percentages of ethanol or methanol in your fuel but alcohols in high percentages will shrink carb gaskets, swell or deteriorate rubber parts and melt plastic parts like plastic floats ruining your carburetor. That is why they have made all brass floats and special brass and stainless parts in aircraft and racing carburetors for years.

Gasoline and diesel, etc is shipped thru the same pipelines. There is an amount of the different fuels that get mixed up somewhat. That is sold on the market and someone buys it.

Yep seen it in KY, I buy 93 octane and a couple of brands make my soobie rattle like 87. Shell is still ok here so far.
Pay more and get less.

BS is resereved for the fields. Spenta major portion of the last 31 years working with fuels, diesel, gasoline ethonol, methanol ETC. Since I am a graduate chemical engineer and have worked in the field I know wherefor I speak The percentage of ethonal is different in various parts of the country and so are the additives put into fuel ETC. Do you also know (fact) that ethanol yeilds app 30 percent less mileage and a considerable less in power in some instances.

For many ther were warnings for a lot of cars that said DO NOT USE ALCOHOL FUELS OR FUEL WITH ALCOHOL.Ethanol is very corrosive and will destroy some types of rubber completely. Engines made to run on ethanol are made differently and with differnt compounds. Try lead substitue but I am not sure that would help with corrosion . It will help with the running factor. I use it in my 51 Farmall M and have seen a real improvement.

What would a "lead substitute" do? An acomplished chemical engineer student such as yourself would know that ethanol already has a higher octane rating then regular gas.

Exactly, there are NO rubber parts in any tractor carbs.

Yep, you need to go to tractor supply and see some of these new carb kits. The tip of the jet is rubber these darn thins wear in after a while and the tip gets lodged in the cup and expands on the back side. Result? stuck in the field. Seen several tractors like this we brought in probably 3 this year.

Turke, I have seen those kits at TSC. I refuse to buy them, and so should everyone else. Those kits are total junk. A good kit will still have the rubber tip on the needle valve, except it is not rubber, it is "viton", And no, I don't know what "viton" is, but I do know that ethanol will not have any effect on it. I rebuild Farmall carburetors. I do know what I am talking about when I say there are NO rubber parts in tractor carburetors.

Dunno - I just got done rebuilding a Marvel-Shiebler for my Ford - there are THREE rubber o-rings..... ...

Been running Ethanol since forever with no ill effects in anything - car, truck, lawn mower, equipment, or tractors.

Dachsund, I have also rebuilt those Marvel-Schebler carbs, I have never found a rubber o-ring in any of them.

Well - this is the second M-S carb I have rebuilt lately, and BOTH had rubber o-rings. There are literally HUNDREDS of different carbs out there - neither one of us has seen them all. I agree that the TSC kits are pretty much useless and don't have all the parts you need.

Someone probably sold you some ethanol. Good cleaner, but causes problems sometimes like this.
