purple loosestrife

Purple loosestrife appeared on my property. So far, its just isolated clusters around ponds and ditches which I have been pulling up by hand. But like other invasive plants I'm sure it will overwhelm my meager efforts soon. (My property is already home to widespread thickets of multiflora rose, autumn olive and european buckthorn.) I'm just wondering how other property owners are handling the purple menace. Are you pulling it, spraying it with Roundup, or already giving up?

Glyphosate (Rodeo - which is roundup without the surfacants which are deadly to aquatic animals) sprayed after flowering, probably works best after seed set, but if you time it right (just before seed set) you may get lots of translocation to the roots and knock out a bunch of the seeds before they mature.

It's completely surrounded our 23 acre pond and our small pond, it's 7 feet tall and everywhere it is, soft marshy, it appeared a few years ago, not sure what the deal is, does not seem to burn when crispy dry either, some hearty weed it is. Does not seem to grow anywhere else. This and golden rod is a pain to deal with. I was mowing some 6'-7' high at the edge of the pond, caught a little of the purple stuff, then saw that front tire cutting in, time to turn towards dry ground. I'm not sure how to get rid of it, (unless those beetles were effective).

Over the last five years I have had many adventures trying to mow the loosestrife in a boulder-strewn meadow. This year the plant hasn't been a problem because of the invasion of the beetles brought in from Europe to prey on it.

Members of the Ministry of Natural Resources work crew I had at the farm this spring proudly told me that "We got to meet the Beetles." Last summer they released a large number of them at Crosby, Ontario, about a mile west of our property.

Mind you every time I try to eat a raspberry from the garden I have to shoo a few of these critters off it. But there are only widely scattered clumps of loosestrife this year, and I guess that is good.

We've been pulling ours now for many years and I see that to-day, we've got about a dozen to pull this year. Unfortunately, the neighbours down strean just let their's go.

Out here in SW Idaho / Eastern Oregon, the weed guides say to spray with glyphosate (Roundup) when in full bloom. Got a couple of plants on my place that I need to spray this week.

Even though we have state laws mandating control of noxious weeds, I don't see much (any) enforcement or effects of enforcement. :-(
