Way Up Here ...

I have some tie rods here, the type with the ball at the end which is cast (I think they are cast) right into (and part of) the arm assembly itself. The ball fits inside sort of a spring-loaded "socket" in the wheel spindle end. The balls themsleves are OK but at the stem end of the balls, they have worn away somewhat and I want to weld them up (build up weld) before reassembling all of this. Problem is, I don't know whether these are cast iron, cast steel, or maybe something else. Any ideas as to what type of metal they might be? I want to make sure before welding, I don't want any suprises later?

I had a drive shaft repaired once a few years back and they put a plastic coating on the splines and assembled it. It took up the gap and the play in the splines when it hardened. I was wondering if today they did it with tie rod ends too.

Now if i was going to weld tie rods and i was sure they were steel I would not use regular welding rod, i think i would use hardface so it won't wearout so quickly. You may need some small round grinding stones to smooth it out after its welded. A few yaers back i was running 4x4 trucks mainly in off road situations and i was using a heavy grease for earth moving equipment. It gave my tie rod ends an extended life. I think it was penzoil that made the best quality grease in that earth moving equipment catagory. I tried others in EP2 but they don't compare to the penzoil.

I suggest that they are either forged or cast steel. Either welds wonderfully with MIG, TIG, or proper electrode. Take a piece of known cast iron and a piece of known steel, touch each to ginding wheel and look at the sparks. The cast iron will have short red sparks that burst. The steel will have longer yellow sparks. Then test the arms the same way.
