I have used Gates brand belts for years, but this summer I have been having a lot of probelms with them. I broke a new one on my Mott flail, and the replceemtn only ran aobut 3 hours and started rolling out of the pulleys (normal life on them previously has been 2 to 3 years). On my rider, the new one i put on this spring broke last month. In 19 years for the flail and 9 years for the riding mower I have never broken a belt till now. I posted this same comment on another forum, and found I am not the only one having problems with new Gates belts, and was wondering if anyone on here is having similar problems.

I had bad time with Gates belts year before on old riding mower. Put on all new pulleys and idler pulleys and bearings and still had problems with Gates belts. Motion Industries only had that brand. I got some other belts from Graingers / Dayton brand and they worked better on mower till we thrashed the motor. Gates belts were half price of Graingers but I still won't use them anymore because of the poor quality. Went with a Cub Cadet mower now and their belts aren't much better and keep jumping off. Everyone sells crummy belts now. Go to a mower shop and ask if they can get you a aftermarket high quality blue or green colored kevlar belt. I've had good luck with those. Only Gates belts we've had good service out of lately are ones I put on air compressor but those only been on there for 6 months too. I doubt they will last 20 years like belts that came on compressor?
