Hi All.

I recently bought a used 501 sickle in good shape. The hitch on the sickle is something I"ve never seen before and won"t attach to my 56" IH300. I went to my local equipment dealer and was told the sickle has a ball hitch and my tractor has a quick hitch. When I asked if there was a way to convert the sickle to my hitch I was told it would be cheaper to buy another tractor ? Am I up against a wall with this ?

Thanks.

Randy.

The bar on the right side is the break-a-way and need a mount on the axle to work, also you need a draw bar to hook the lift chain to. I have a 515 and hooked it up to my Super C with a FH and 3 point adaptors.(it did not work worth a hoot, fits my 504 with 3 point fine)

The Ford mowers were great on a Ford or MF tractor with the category 1 liftarms. There is a clamp mechanism that attaches to each liftarm. One unit stabilizes the side to side motion of the mower, there would be a lot of side to side shake since it is a pitman drive unit. The other unit causes the tension to increase on a chain connected to the cutterbar making it pivot upward when the mower is lifted. These mowers also used their own toplink which was connected to a large coil spring to control the lowering speed of the mower. If you trade mowers you will not be any better off with a NH451 (although one of the best mowers made) because it utilizes a yoke that connects to the tractor end of the toplink for the extra blade lift and side to side stabilization. There are many old JD and IH mowers that bolted to the drawbar loops on the old Hs and Ms as well as the quickhitch drawbars. It was mentioned earlier to get a quickhitch mower, that would be your easiest answer. There is often one for sale on this site or E-bay.

You used to be able to find fast hitch arms with three point balls on the end, these would get your lower arms if the width spacing was good. Then a simple light chain would work for a top link. Or just get a couple of fast hitch arms and weld them to the mower and use the IH fast hitch, which I have always liked better then three point hookups. There was a reason that they where called FAST hitches.

That sickle mower was made to be used on Ford tractors like the 800 series etc. You might be able to get the 3 point arms for you tractor but even then it probably will not owrk correctly with out doing some fab work

When our 960 Ford broke down (with 3pt hitch), dad made the 501 (with 3pt hitch) work on the IHC 300 (with 2pt or Fast hitch) for a day.

It was not a good thing, but it did get the hay cut for that day. Bar barely lifted, angle was off, 300 didn't have enough lift height to operate anything right....

I don't know what a ball hitch is tho???? Do they mean 3pt hitch? All I've ever seen on a 501.

Anyhow, the 501 mowers use some funky geomitrey & clamps to make the bar lift, & you will have _much_ difficulty making that work right with a cheap 2pt to 3pt conversion on the 300 (the 2 puch-in arms).

You would need a full new 3pt system on the 300, that runs $600 or more.

Cheapest option imho is to find a 2pt IHC mower for your needs. They are rarer, but out there.

Or you can convert your tractor to 3 point. There are also adapters to convert the quick hitch to ball hitch.

Thanks everyone for your help. I do have another question. There is a drag link on one side only. What purpose is it used for. Randy.
