We have just moved onto 10 acres. most of it horse pasture and will need to be mowed regularly. Bushhog or Finish mower??? And I'd like to get somrthing roughly 8' width so we don't spend all our life mowing... What HP tractor would you suggest for pulling such a machine- Thanks and God Bless, Sluggo in Kentucky

I agree about needed hp and mowing conditions but I don't care if you are mowing a sandlot you'd better have the hp to run it properly. He said he was mowing horse pasture so I'm guessing it isn't too rough with bushes or tall grass, especially with frequent mowing.

My Buddy bought a brand new BUSHHOG BRAND bushhog last summer to mow His CRP ground. The ground has some really steep slopes so He's not setting any speed records normally and His D-17 Allis diesels have all they want to run the thing normally... He's shopping for a D-19 diesel or 190XT now.... For only 10 acres I'd get a 6 ft cutter and a tractor in the 35-40 HP range... I've mowed thousands of acres with a pull-type 6 ft BRILLION cutter pulled with a Super H FARMALL.... It would cut off anything I cared to drive over.... and if it was dry enough and not too tall the field looked like a golf course when I was done.

I found myself in a similar situation last year. Got married and joined my wife when I retired from the AF. We've got 10 acres, most of which is fields that hadn't been taken care of in over a decade other than being mowed a couple times a year.

Fortunately for me, my father-in-law gave me his old tractor (International Harvester 404) and I bought a 5-foot bush hog to go with it. That does the job nicely. I can understand not wanting to spend your life mowing! But... the bigger the cutter, the bigger the tractor you'll need--and the more both will cost.

One option might be to buy a 4-wheeler and a self-powered bush hog to pull behind it.

Good luck!
Tom

How much does a 4 wheeler and self propelled mower cost?

I don't have a clue! Never did any pricing because I already have the tractor. It's something that was suggested to me. I think they'd tend to be a bit narrower, but maybe you would be able to go faster than on a tractor. Might be a more practical idea for someone that already has a 4-wheeler, or that plans to get one, than for someone that would be getting it strictly for mowing.

Cheers,
Tom

My MF 231 has about 34 hp. and I pull a 6ft woods mower with no problem, in most areas, only problem is real thick wet grass. If I keep the blades sharp it will leave a good finish. With a larger mower you will need more hp, and more money for a larger tractor and 8ft mower. You will probably only gain 1 1/2-2 hrs with a 8 ft mower. Stan

Personally I'd go with a bushhog for durability unless you want your pasture to look like a yard and I don't think you want it mowed that close do you? HP for an 8 footer would probably be around 40 - 45 & up. At 8 ft. you are likely thinking one on wheels and not a pickup. It would take a larger tractor to pick up a 3pt. 8ft. bushhog assuming they make them. I'm not sure. You can go to a website of a bushhog brand and it will show you rated gearbox hp needed. Gearbox hp rating has little to do with the hp requirements for the unit..... ..Hp requirements are best determined by your needs. No heavy brush less hp. Small trees & waist high weeds more hp.
If your grass is heavy and you do buy an 8 ft a tractor of about 50 hp will operate it best. If you buy a 3 point cutter you will have to weight the front end of the tractor. Good luck.....
