We were disappointed with Starband. It was faster than our really slow dialup, but it wasn't nearly as fast as we had been led to believe it would be, and it seemed to get slower the longer we used it. We were able to hook up to a microwave setup that is on a mountain about 10 miles away. It costs about $10 a month more than we were paying Starband, but is almost instantaneous and, again unlike the satellite link, it has never failed to work. I suppose if the power went out to the tower on the mountain, it would go out, but that hasn't happened so far. The other problem we had with Starband was that they would not help us at all in networking. I had a heck of a time ever getting a wireless network to operate in my house with the satellite system. The information Starband put out required a proxy to work and you had to buy software that cost over $100. My son finally figured out how to make the wireless system to work with the Windows program we had. But when my wife bought a new laptop with an internal wireless link, it never would work on our wireless system. The microwave system worked fine with our wireless equipment. We didn't have to buy anything more. Needless to say, we are pleased with the new microwave link system and were less so with the Starband satellite system.
