Allan,

Thanks for the reply. Nuther question. Power lines run at about a 90 degree angle and are about 100 plus ft. from antenna.Would that interfere with the signal. What about solar interferance. This has been going on for several weeks now. Cant get my RFDTV and watch the steam threshing shows. I take it you got unstuck.

Steve

You must have direct line of sight, no trees, power lines, or anything else, to the satelite that you are trying to receive.

The frequency of the satelite transmitters are so high that interference from most sources are usually not a problem. Solar interference is rare but can happen during solar flares. Thunder storms between your receiver and the satelite will cause brief interuption of the signal.

Once you know the coordinates of 'your' satelite you can use an electronics box that Radio Shack, and others, sell to fine tune the position of your dish. This box works very well. The trick is to know where 'your' satelite is as there are many up there.
Allen is right, the menu function built into your box will tell you how well you are receiving your signal. It will also tell you the coordinates of 'your' satelite for your location.

I used to get the solar interference thing on Directtv in FL, but apparently it is not an issue up here in KY.

Has your satellite tv worked ok in the past? If it has and the power line isn't new, you can eleminate that as a problem.

Can you go into the menu on your satellite receiver and bring up your signal strength that the receiver is getting from the sat dish?

Check all the connections, make sure they are all tight. Check that the mounting on the dish hasn't shifted, I had one on a mess hall at Ft Riley that wasn't bolted on right, once I got it tightened down good and adjusted the aiming a bit, it started working fine...

If you still have problems, take the cable off at each point and look to make sure the center conductor is there and not bent and hasn't disappeared up inside the cable, I had some junk cable at my last house that the center conductor was to short on, so it liked to hide back inside the cable...I finally threw it all out as I kept fighting it.

Steve,

Run the setup from the "menu" button on your remote. Follow that menu down until you get to the "Point Dish" thingy.

It should give you a signal strength as a green bar across the bottom of your screen with an obnoxious beeping noise. If it is red, you have a signal problem, if it is green, I'd think your signal is okay.

Hey Allen in reply to Allan In NE, 08-09-2006 08:53:07
How is your web performance with STARBAND?
I have TELECOMMUTER PKG and it is disappointing.

Thinking of CLEARWIRE.
Your thoughts?

Heck,

I dunno. I use starband times 3 dishes and it is as fast as I can pull the trigger.

Just doesn't like the snow on the dish is our only problem. :>)

We were disappointed with Starband. It was faster than our really slow dialup, but it wasn't nearly as fast as we had been led to believe it would be, and it seemed to get slower the longer we used it.

We were able to hook up to a microwave setup that is on a mountain about 10 miles away. It costs about $10 a month more than we were paying Starband, but is almost instantaneous and, again unlike the satellite link, it has never failed to work. I suppose if the power went out to the tower on the mountain, it would go out, but that hasn't happened so far.

The other problem we had with Starband was that they would not help us at all in networking. I had a heck of a time ever getting a wireless network to operate in my house with the satellite system. The information Starband put out required a proxy to work and you had to buy software that cost over $100. My son finally figured out how to make the wireless system to work with the Windows program we had. But when my wife bought a new laptop with an internal wireless link, it never would work on our wireless system.

The microwave system worked fine with our wireless equipment. We didn't have to buy anything more. Needless to say, we are pleased with the new microwave link system and were less so with the Starband satellite system.

To Allan,TimS and IH2444.

Thanks for the pointers, reminders and whatever to get the satelite to work. Give me about 3 days and if it works I will let you know. And if it still dont work I will let you know.
