My chimney is a 30 year old masonry type, with a 12x12 flue extending 18 inches above the surrounding brickworks. A few years back I used caulking to close up some of the cracks that had developed over the years. I'm now doing a proper repair by removing all the broken bricks, concrete, and the cracked flue that is exposed to the weather. How can I let the flue expand and contract and yet keep the water from seeping down beside the flue? Is there an expandable foam product that is waterproof as well as heat proof and will still work as in an expansion joint?
Thanks

Enrich the mortar by adding 25% to 35% more pure Portland to it and also add the glass fibers to the mix. I did that on mine and it hasn't cracked in over 12 years now. If the bricks are spauling at the top then very likely that the flue crocks are leaking either at the seams or at cracks in the crocks. The flue gasses generate moisture or condensation which gets outside the crocks, penetrates the bricks then freezes in the uppermost bricks and causes them to spaul.

Find a good sheet metal shop and have them make a chimney cap.
