Anybody got an idea how much drawbar horsepower a tractor loses (b/c of tire weight / driveline)when you look at two identical tractors side by side, one with FWA one without?
Thanks..

I am referring to FWA. Hydraulic. I've had several hours on Ford TW-25, and TW-35 (both with FWA) and really do notice the slippage with the FWA off. I could really tell a huge advantage when crop farming, but was curious about smaller tractors (70-100hp) with FWA. Seems like the FWA really "bogs" these down on hills. I'm really looking for something in the 130hp range and trying to figure if I want FWA OR MFWD. The tractor will be used both in haying AND tillage. Looking for a good older tractor not a new one.

I think we need to get the terminology straight:
FWA= Front Wheel Assist, generally hyd powered
MFWD= Mechanical Front Wheel Drive
Which one are you refering to???

What you would lose in HP, you gain in fuel consumption and acres covered. Run a MFWD through the field and kick it off and see how much slippage you get. BIG differance. Big or small implement, it is very noticeable.

The only horse power loss from a FWA would be the extra power drag from the hydraulic pump,which is usually larger than the standard pump,probably at maximum load you would lose 5-7 engine HP over a 2wd tractor. This in most cases would be offset by increased drawbar pull/less wheel slippage.
