This would be a good old tractor, except it steers like a "Sherman Tank" (without power steering)!! I've cleaned out some old water-contaminated grease, (not easy), from the steering box, & replaced with new grease, etc., but no change. It is even hard to turn back to center, from a hard left, or right turn. Anyone got any ideas on how to correct this?? Thanks. Jerry - Okla.

Have you checked anything other than the steering box?
Jack the front end off the ground and try. If it is the steering box it will still be hard, if elsewhere it will be easier.
Elsewhere? Track might be wrong, steering joints tight, tyres too slack, wrong tyres, king pins shot, wheel bearings/hubs shot. Do for a start?
Regards, RAB

Thanks to all of you who replied to my problem. I've owned this tractor for about a year, most of that year was spent working on it. (Things like rewiring the (already) converted to 12v. system. I swear it was charging backwards! It's OK now, in the charging dept). I've owned an 8N for about 25 years - been a good one. Also, have owned a 76 Scout II for about 20 years, & been a good one. Yes, I've checked all the other components, with front jacked up. Right king pin wore bad, but not binding. True, this tractor shows a lot of "lack of grease." Previous owner sandwiched a large washer under the lock-washer/nut on Rt Pitman arm, so it would force it on the spline farther. It appears to me that the Pitman shaft extends about 1/8 inch farther to the left. The big washer was sandwiched into the gearbox housing, & have about got that corrected. Anyone know how to "move" the Pitman arm to the Rt about 1/8 inch?? Yes, I agree that the bearings may have seized in the gearbox. Note: This gearbox has a grease fitting on the top; perhaps an add-on. True, it SHOULD use 90W gearoil, but I've not seen a tool, or a method, to get the 90W into the box, except a little in the very bottom, with a side-plate off. Have not been able to get the bearing under the steering wheel out, (it's OK), without tearing it up, to put 90W oil in at this point. Thanks again! Jerry

I also have a golden jubilee and have never had a problem with steering. It steers very easily. I don't know where your problem is, but the other responses already posted are good leads. Good luck.

Sounds like you neeed to tear it apart & replace all the bearings in the steering box .If the oil was that bad , its probably built up crud & possibly rust in the bearings . It's also possible that the bearings & bushings in both sides of the front axle plus the center pin are bad also .Maybe maintenance was not the former owners best interest . The jubbie is a grand tractor . Njoy & God Bless . Ken

The steering box should be filled with 90W oil not grease. All the Jubilees I have drove steered easy as long as they didn't have a loader on them
