O.T. Buick Transmission removal

I have the unenviable task of changing the transmission in a 91 Park Ave. It is bad enough, but there is one bolt behind the engine on top of the passenger side output that the Chilton book tells me there is, but you can't see it and you can't even reach up in there to feel it. Has anyone else had to change one of these? Any suggestions. I am afraid that I might have to take the back manifold and crossover pipe off to access it, but that doesn't look like any fun either. I have a replacement transmission so I know the bolt hole is there.

Roy,

Support the engine by hanging it from a bar(s) teed across the strut towers and the radiator support. Then split the frame at the right front and left rear corners and get that half of it completely out of your way. Remove the left front strut.

Take the right wheel off, there are bolts in the end of the right tranny output shaft housing that have to come out anyway along with that speed sensor connector.

To get at that bolt that is hidden on the bell housing, I use a long four foot extension to reach in between the motor and the transmission case from the passenger side. Takes an 18mm socket just like all the rest of 'em.

That crossover pipe has to come off anyway; leave the both manifolds in place tho. The bell housing won't clear with the crossover pipe in place.

Soak those manifold studs on the crossover real good with panther juice.

A 91 Park Ave. is front wheel drive. I've never had the pleasure of removeing the trans in this car but I know that bolt is a real bear. All GM front drives with V6 and four speed overdrive are similar. I think you can get to it with the right extention swivel combo but the problem is getting enough leverage to break it free. I knew a guy in tech school whose dad had a transmission shop and he said they had a box full of those bolts as they are even harder to install and are not really needed to hold the trans, [His theory] not mine.

You're right,

You can't see that bolt nor can you get a hand on it. I put the bolt in the socket on the end of that long extension and "feel/fish" in back in the hole.

Really needs to be there as it is one of the two main load bearing bolts.

if its rear wheel drive how about removing the rear crossmember and lowering the rear on the tranny to allow removal of the top bolt with the earlier mentioned long extension and socket(maybe a universal joint too) bill m.

Aloha, I don't know if this will apply to your vehicle but if you have to use a jack to keep the back of the engine in place, then you could probably lower the jack so the rear of the engine tilts downward. If you are able to do this, be careful you don't bang the distributor against the firewall.
