I purchased fafnir brand ball bearings for my Case 2470 transmission, one bearing was $58.00 and other one was $30.00, I was looking on ebay and there is a guy there selling new bearings very reasonable FIT brand one bearing is $5.90 and the other is $4.90 only difference is they are shieled but I can remove the shield's, I was thinking about returning the fafnir's and get these for about $20.00 total shipped! is FIT a good bearing? my fafnirs say on them (Japan),

Considering the low price I am guessing those bearings are made in China. China does not understand the concept of quality control, some of that stuff is good, some of it is junk, and there is no guarantee which you will get. It is also possible that the bearings being sold on eBay are rejects, and were intercepted on their way to the scrap bin. Also, having worked in a ball bearing factory for about 25 years, I can tell you that it is not a matter of just removing the shields. A bearing made to be packed to be packed with grease and then shields installed usually does not have the same tolerances and specs. as the bearing which does not have seals or shields and is meant to operate immersed in oil. Not saying it won't work, but to me it would not be worth the gamble.

I'm not familiar with Case, but I would imagine that a 2470 transmission takes a bit of time to get at and work on. You've got $88 into good-quality bearings now. You'd save about $68 going with the questionable bearings. Is it really worth it? Just think how hard you'd want to kick yourself if those questionable bearings fail. You'd spend way more than $68 in gaskets, time, ect. going back in there and doing the job again.

fafnir bearings are good bearings. I have used them on many occasions. Fafnir is part of the Torrington company which is part of Ingersoll Rand. If you check out the link below, it takes you to a product page on the timken web site. They have listed bearings under the timken-torrington name and timken-fafnir name. I would not hesitate to use fafnir bearings. They are among the best made. I would even put them up against timken. As a lead maintenance tech on precision CNC machines, I rely on fafnir for a lot of my bearings.

Sounds like the ignition resistor wire feeding the coil is bad.The engine will crank when the starter is activatged because of the ignition bypass wire coming off the wire on the solenoid that is not from the start button.
