How are the berries in your neck of the woods this year? Here in central Oh. I think we've had one of the best crops in years. I've picked about 2 gal. so far (all wild berries) just off of my place. I don't even have time to think about picking over at the neighbors place, I think it would take about 3-4 hrs. just to go through the berries at my place. So far I've made five quarts of blackberry ice cream and a quart of black berry syrup. What all recipe's do you guys like for berries, I'm not gonna do jelly because I think that's a bit too much work in this heat.

Ours are just now ripe here in northeast Ohio, we have a huge amount this year. I brush hogged them down last year after the harvest and they came back in gangbusters this year. I think the rain in june had a lot to do with it

I"m in southern Ohio, and my wild blackberries are doing great this year, but my tame ones didn"t produce much at all. and I can"t explain why. Granted, it"s been dry here recently, but I don"t see why the tame ones wouldn"t do as well as the wild ones.

just keep mowing them down. they go away if kept cut short. Roundup works as well.

Blackberries suck here in east central KY this year, not enough water only about 1/4 normal size.

The rain stopped here just in time to ruin the blackberries down in the swamp. No bigger than soybeans.
My sister runs irrigation on her pastures and we were able to get a good many from her fences. they've been over for weeks, though.
Taking several freezer bags to Saluda to make dumplings. Cobblers will be blueberry and peach.
Two batches of ice cream a day, one a flavor, one vanilla to go with the dumplings and cobblers. I look to gain double digits again this year.
Happy pigging, Wm

PS - Cobbler recipe in reply to williamf, 08-03-2006 05:15:11
There are more recipes for cobbler than for bar-b-que, I bet. Here's the one I use, 'cause it's easy and the way I was brought up.

Fruit Cobbler 3/4 stick butter (or a whole one, it's my heart) 1 cup self rising flour 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup milk (whole, 1%, skim; doesn't matter) 2 cups or a can of store bought fruit (fresh or canned or thoroughly thawed - some, like peaches or pears canned without syrup, will want a little added sugar - most canned will want most of the syrup poured off. I have, jonesing, used fruit cocktail. Fabulous.) Put butter in 2-quart glass dish Put dish in oven and set to 375 - by the time the oven preheats the butter will have melted Put flour, sugar, and milk in a mixing bowl and mix until the lumps are gone Take dish from oven and swirl butter up around edges - carefully, it's hot Pour batter into dish, then dump fruit into the center Put dish back into oven and bake (uncovered) 45 minutes. The batter will rise up around and over the fruit and turn dark golden brown.

Lots of wild fruit here this year. The late freezes stayed away and we have cokecheeries, currents, elderberries are coming on and there will be lots of plums. Haven't seen any grapes.

Several weeks back I know there was a bumper crop on a friends property. So many that you couldn't even begin to pick them all. Unfortunately between the birds and the dry weather they're all gone now.

Well here in S. Central Missouri they really started off nice but when it stopped raining they stopped growing. Have a small patch (all wild) that usually produces about 15 gallon. This year they weren't much larger than a pea. I didn't even bother. Hope I have enough left from last year for a few cobblers.....

Now you're talking my language. Ours are very good this year, but I am not sure if I have blackberries or black raspberries. Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference?

Anyway, without a doubt, cobbler with vanilla ice cream (preferably homemade) is #1 for me!!!

Need to pick this weekend!

Gary

Gary, black rasberries are sort of dome shaped, when you pick them they come off real easy if they're ripe. Kinda look like little igloo's. They are smaller than blackberries and ripen a few weeks earlier. Blackberrys are bit bigger and not as sweet. They also have larger seeds.

Still a little bit of a mystery to me. Mine come off pretty easy if ripe. Seem to grow to various sizes, maybe depending on age of the plant?

They definately have seeds (small price to pay), but large vs small is relative. They seem pretty small but kinda hard and can get stuck between teeth (again, small price to pay). Any difference in the plants? We actually pick on about an acre that we are trying to buy. thinking that the 1/2 acre of berries makes it worth the development price that they are asking!

IaGary - you out there? You would probably know right off what I've got.

The young, first year growth of raspberry plants have a white wax-like coating on the canes ( main stem ) that will wipe off easily if touched. The canes are round whereas blackberry canes are rough, kind of ribbed-like. Raspberry plants around here have three smooth surfaced leaves on main leaf stems, most blackberry plants I see have three larger leaves and two smaller on each main leaf stem and the leaves are more course and tough.

Gary you most likely have black raspberrys.

But if they are still producing they might be blackberrys.

Blackberrys are bigger and as big as the end of your thumb.

Raspberry are about the size of the end of your little finger.

The only blackberrys I know of around here are north of you about 3 miles.

Gary if you're picking them now they are almost certainly blackberries and not rasberries. Black rasberries will be about the same size, blackberries can vary from 1/4" to 1-1/4" on the same cane.

had a row through through the garden on a arber....

was picking about a gallon or better every day....

then some air born weed killer from up wind of me got about 90% of them, going to re-plant this fall...

Sorry to hear about your berries. Any cropdusters around? Anyway, 'mine' are wild. biggest are the size you mention but some are smaller. They do have seeds, but maybe a factor of being wild? If I get this spot bought, will mow some paths right through them because of the thorns, we only pick around the edges and we can't eat that many!
