I have a old John Deere combine book with the parts Nos. for the engines. It took a Zenith Carb. Two different Nos. of carbs.

Hi Dave, must save that combine. I have a friend here in the UK who restores old combines. His latest project is a 1920s Sunshine stripper header combine. Last year he restored and worked a 1924 Holt trailed combine to work behind a 1919 Holt crawer tractor. Other combines he has restored are 2 MH21s IH 123SP 2 1930s IH trailed combines a UK built AC Gleaner A and several 1950s and 60s machines.

My uncle has one of those engines laying in the weeds. Has a gas tank with a big JD logo on the end. It's in pretty bad shape.

Is it the Lycoming engine? The tank was on all of the JD combines, but the engine could be a Hercules as well. If it is this engine I might be interested in parts off it, if you were wanting to sell them.

I remember seeing a lycoming tag or name on it somewhere. I might be able to rescue it for someone, but he rarely parts with anything.

Thank You Bob. That is exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate it a lot. Any ideas on where a guy can get himself a copy of that catalog?

Is this about my 5a combine? If so, can you provide the numbers of those zenith carbs?
David

Geeze Dave! If it's for that ole combine below maybe not? lol. Can kind of get a idea if we knew the cubic inches or carb throat size but I'm not sure what was original on it. Your FM J or X mag isn't original and that engine probably came with a old Dixie or Splitdorf mag on it or maybe even a Bendix. That's a oldy and those Lycoming engines were also used by JD on some old hay presses. I don't see that JD lists anything for the Lycoming power unit either but you might call them at 800-522-7448 and ask. Good luck.

I don't know much about it. Looks like Bob has me on the right track. Near as I can tell it was made between 1934 and 1936. I don't know about the mag, maybe Bob has that as well? I do know it was running when my grandfather parked it back in the 40's. He needed a combine, but none could be found during the war so he bought this one. Should be a fun and educational project.

Dave, It's going to be quite a project all right and keep you out of trouble for a while. I looked around this morning and no carbs like that but I always keep FM mag parts and other mags that would fit that engine. Still a few of those old combines like that around here but no one fixing them up. Good to see someone fixing one up before the scrap man gets it.

Dave it has been my experience that if you find any carb. with the same bolt patern as your manifold, and b that I mean the width between the bolts or studs, the venturi and throat size will run your engine very well..... as mentioned just my experience.
