I've got this old JD combine and I'm planning on getting to work on it over the winter, but I'm trying to round up any information and parts I might need ahead of time. From the January-Februry 2005 issue of Two-Cylinder magazine I'm pretty sure I figured out it as a 5a combine, so I ordered the manual from Deere. The problem is the manual only talks about the Hercules 6 cylinder motor, and I've got the 4 cylinder Lycoming motor. My problem is, I'm missing the carburetor. The motor is a Lycoming AFD 2167. Any ideas on what carburetor it might take, or anywhere I can find some of that information? Does anyone know if this motor was used in a different application?

I believe I would try a carburetor off a John Deere 40 or maybe a 45 combine if you can determine which Deere engine is closer in cubic inches. If the throttle plate is in the manifold then tie the 40 carb throttle plate wide open.

I've actually got a 45 combine around that should have the carb still on it. I guess I could give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

Now that is a genyoowine antee-Q.
Little before my time as I have never worked on a Lycoming but did fart around with some old Hercs and Deere 4cyl power unit. Does it have a governor? Or can a small updraft carb be adapted. If you aren'tworried about keeping it bone stock then just drop a Chevy small block in it LOL

Here is a picture of where the carburetor mounts. I have considered a retrofit of some other carburetor, but am not sure what to start with. Any suggestion of one that might work? third party image

WyoDave, It looks to me like it is controled by a throttle plate above the carb mount???You might try a Ub or G Moline carb. You would have to connect the 2 throttle shaft. I would guess that rod goes through the block to a governor on the other side. Hasting list rings for it. Earl In Illinois

Thanks. That is how its set up. Looks like I've got the numbers for carbs, but I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

David, I would bet that a carb manufacturer would be able to get something to fit that, with as little as the throat opening, and the engine size. Is there a small aircraft FBO near you, the lycombing engines were popular for old aircraft. HTH, JohnG

In Wyoming nothing is ever close. Especially if it deals with airplanes. LOL I will keep the alternate carburetor as a back up plan, but I would like to find the original carburetor if I can. Thanks for the help.
