I have a John Deere 5 foot brush hog on my 9n and have used it for about 12 years so far. The tractor defenitely gets a work out from hauling it around but most of the time it does very well with it. I would say it wont tear up your 8n, it will just keep its sinuses cleaned out very well!

Your 8N can handle it if you do as DickTN said below. Limiter chains are needed and an ORC is an absolute must. I used a House 5' on my 2N for a couple of years. It will work well and do a good job as long as you aren't getting into a lot of brush. For trimming fields and pastures and keeping down light junk, you'll be fine.

Hi Dave nn , Ive got a question for any of you folks, Ive got a MF 50 and the hydrolics bleed off and I have to keep picking the brushhog up, can I use chains to hold the implement off the ground like you do with the 8n? Thanks

Lou, I'm not at all familiar with the MF, but I see no reason why limiter chains won't work the same as the N's, assuming you have a solid point to attach the chains. The N's generally use the long pin that holds the top rocker as the anchor point.

Hi TN , So the chains go from the point where the top link attaches to the tractor on each side to where the 3 pt arms attach to the brush hog? Thanks

The Howse 5 foot bush hog should work very well with your N. A couple of things you WILL need are an overrunning coupler and limiter chains. The ORC is needed because the N tractors drive the PTO in such a fashion that the inertia from the bush hog spinning will drive the tractor into anything in front of it if you don't use an ORC. The limiter chains control the cutting height so that you do not have to depend on the hydraulics to maintain proper cutting height. One thing to check is whether you have the original 1-1/8" PTO shaft. If so, it might be worthwhile to install the updated 1-3/8" shaft to gain the added shaft strength. HTH

Jody, the bearing and seal can be changed on the PTO shaft. However, it will take at least a 10 ton press to get the bearing off. Your call, of course, but unless funding is a problem, I'd elect for the 1-3/8 shaft which will come with the new bearing and seal already installed. Of course, this will require a different ORC if you have the original 1-1/8" shaft installed now. Procedure for changing the shaft is simple. Nose the tractor down into a ditch (avoids losing hyraulic fluid), remove the four bolts holding the PTO assembly in, take the old shaft out and stick the new one in. Job done. HTH
