What was your seeding rate on the oats? They look great.

Andrew,I planted 2 bushel to the acre.
Thanks for the comment.
Some of the stand went down due to high wind and rain, but most was as you see it. ~brad

I've been planting closer to 3 bu per acre, but my yields are not that good, more like 50-60 per acre. We're in SE MN too, in the very corner, about 5mi from WI and 5 from Iowa.

thanks for the info.

Andrew,
We also have pretty heavy ground.
Also, have been getting great yeilds from "JIM" certified seed oats bought from Krause's in Hope,Mn.
A farmer 2 miles from us planted oats from the bin and got only about 500 bushels from 15 acres.
We're just north of Albert Lea and a few mi. from Hope.
Are you close to Rushford? I bought a couple of tractors from a guy there, and was engaged to a gal in Preston.~brad

I was using Reeves oats from Albert Lea Seedhouse. The ground isn't so great, and although I'd like to think our yeild could be better, I think it's fairly typical around here. I would like to try swathing it instead of the direct cut we've been doing the last few years. Just havn't picked up a swather yet. We're still about 40 minutes SE of Rushford.

Why the extra trip with the windrower. Been doing this for years and alwasy wonder why you do extra trips just to cut the oats. I always have just combine the oats and baling straw right behind the combine in most years. rye same way just way more straw. Some years when they don't like to dry down I still just cut them and drop them in bin with air and bale next day. Just wondered why.

Okay just wondered that was all. In my area nobody windrows it that was all I was just wondering. I have been done with the oats, rye and wheat now for few weeks and for others. We all have seeding under neath also. I just pull in and combine it,bale the straw then usualy week or so later will cut the stubble and bale it. If we have a terrible weed spot you just combine around it,(be no crop or much there anyway) and when they mow the stubble later that gets mowed and baled then. Field ends up clean and go from there. Just way I have always done it and won't do any different now. Crop always goes to seed companies as far as the seed 90% of the time the rest goes local individuals. Straw goes to grocery stores.

Around here, nobody cuts small grain crops standing, except for fields that are grain only, and have been sprayed.
The alfalfa (and weeds) would slug the combine because of the close cylinder adjustment.
After swathing,2 days are needed to dry down.
We sell the oats so it needs to be dry and keep the straw for bedding for our dairy herd.
Thanks for the questions....fun to hear how other folks do it! ~brad

Rick,

Brad is doing it the way it should be done.

Chances are that he probably wouldn't have any trouble with direct cutting the weeds I see in his picture, but if you've ever tangled with a field of grain infested with sunflowers, you'd understand.

Sunflowers and nightshade absolutely deal a combine fits.

The 'extra' trip is because of the green stuff you see in the picture. Needs to dry a couple of days so it goes through the combine. Needs to be cut close to the ground to let the alfalfa get max sunshine. If oats is early, some might even get a cutting of hay yet, although it's not recommended in the seedling year.

Good pictures, lots of folks lost the cover crop up here, never got the rain, oats started out nice then went backwards. Going out and mow a field of weeds today. Anyone want to come bale them for cows or ? Bob

Such a new model of swather - my Owatona is, I think, a model 10. It's yellow & red.

I use the same header, but on a silver combine as well. :)

Got my straw stacked in the barn on Sunday & Monday, those were some hot days, eh? I too planted the day or 2 before Easter.
