Does anybody out there have a K&N airfilter on their truck? Can you actually feel more power? I have heared mixed reviews on them. More than one person has told me that they do a poor job of filtering the air. I can buy one for my 2000 chevy 1500 5.3L for $40. What do you guys think?
Mike.

I think they are all hype. They let a lot of stuff past them in my opinion. I have also seen a lot of turbo's that the fins are coated in oil from K&N's. I also know from experience Cummins will not warranty a turbo if a truck has had a K&N filter on it. If the manufacture's thought they were worth a dam they'd have come factory installed.

Careful. Adding that K&N to your 5.3 will make it out power a 8.1 .

At least that's the impression K & N would like you to have.

Something to consider with a K&N oiled filter is the oil getting onto the air flow or air mass sensor of the fuel injection and causing some drivability problems.

As for performance gains on a stock engine, unless the paper filter is extremely poorly made and severely restricting air flow, you're not going to get an appreciable, if any, gain with the K&N.

In the tool section next door, there is an SAE filter test. Type in K & N Filter and it is down quite a ways. Several filters are tested, but the most interesting thing is that a K&N will pass over 40 times as much dirt as an AC Delco that comes with the Duramax with only a 1 to 2% air flow increase.

I have one in my 2002 Dodge cummings. Can't say I get better mileage or more power with it. The one advatage I see is that I can clean it regularly and reuse it. Saves buying a new one every other road trip.

Had a Chevy S-10 one time that came with one in it. I could never tell the difference in performance or mileage. As someone else noted, suspect the reduced restriction is only beneficial at high RPM, particularly with electronic engine controls which measure the actual air flow.

Check out some of the diesel pickup sites. Diesels do respond well to lower flow restriction, so there's always some discussions of low restriction air filters. I recall a couple citations of studies that showed filters like the K&N let noticeably more dirt through than a standard paper filter. Whether that would be a problem in your situation or not is hard to tell. If you never drive on dirt roads & live in an area where there's not a lot of dust, you might get away with a K&N with no problems. Who knows....

Mike, Im an Electrical instead of a Mechanical or Fluid Mechanics Engineer but I tend to agree with the post above. When it comes to energy and so called "improved performance" theres usually some sort of engineering trade off taking place. In the air filters if they offer less restriction to the flow of air that tells me they must let bigger particles through i.e. filter less. I have used them and couldnt see any difference in MPG or performance and may even use them again but my engineering brain and the principles of physics keep tellin me theres gotta be a trade off if they are less restrictive to air flow. If someone can explain how they let more air through but filter the same as the regular filters, Im alllll ears and open minded.

Mike,
The only real gains are way up there in the RPM range. When are you ever driving at the high end of your RPM's? Maybe towing up hill. There is at least one good study out on the web that shows that you are increasing the amount and size of the dirt particles you are letting into your engine with these after market "performance" filters and only realising HP gains at high RPM's that are never encountered under every day driving conditions. I personally won't buy another one. Had one on my '96 F250 and never did notice any difference except it was a little louder under the hood. Some people claim quicker throttle response and better mileage but I think its all in their head.

I agree. I have one in my 5.4L 99 F-150. Can't tell any difference. I also went to Mobil 1 at the same time. I will be going back to the regular oil at my next oil change. Not saying its not good, but its not worth the cost to me. I have never had a engine problem caused from any oil I have used in my 45 years of driving.
