I’ve got more than 20,000 invested in haying equipment, not including 3 tractors & haybarn and haven’t baled enough hay this year to pay for filling my fuel tanks. I’ve burned a thousand bales of early cut alfalfa and brome that was rained on. It hasn’t rained since and now I’m trying to coax another thousand out of a field that should produce 5000. I’m about to give up. Its just to much work and to disappointing. Everybody who drives by wants to buy hay and what I’ve got isn’t good. It is in fact the poorest hay I’ve ever baled and they’re still lined up behind the baler. I just make them promise they won’t tell anyone where they bought it. The 3rd cutting may be better but I don’t think so because we’re so far behind on rain anything short of 39 days just won’t be enough.
Am I the only one with this problem?

Bob

been bad here too, except real dry in the spring so grass did not grow and now wet. Can't fill my hay orders so far for first cut and I still have not started my second, worst year ever for me. Paid hay crew several times to sit around waiting for hay to dry, I am going now with no crew or not much of one and just round baling, can't afford to pay anyone right now until money comes in.

Spent the summer in SW North Dakota on my Dad's farm... things are dry there. Second cutting? Maybe if ma watered the lawn they might need to start the lawn mower for the second time this year!

Hay crop was below average, wheat crop has dried up to probably a 10 bushel average when it should have been 40 bushels. Glad to be a college graduate with a full time job this year, even if they still don't pay enough for the amount of education I had to go through.

Considering the reports from everyone, I cannot complain one bit, it seems many areas have been on the rinse cycle too long and a vast majority of rest is been in the dryer for too long, with a sparse few areas having some sort of balance in between.

What I've noticed here is there was no opportunity to get into the fields on time, although I did speak with one person who is doing quite a bit of small squares, he recently took over a long time horse operation here that has some of the most beautiful rolling hills with astounding views a short distance away, ( a lot of our place has similar qualities, some really nice hayfields still in existence, glad the place was not sold, my parents helped bale those fields when they were young riders at the place ). He's got the latest equipment, he actually leases another property to a Challenger dealer, so when I saw the fields cut in June, he was the only one doing hay, his dry time is cut short by 1 day due to that new self propelled haybine. His fields are recent plantings too, so the hay is nice. Everyone else I see waited it out it seems, and the hay is past it's prime, containing a lot of tan, but dry at least.I just looked at some off the field, some may balk at it but I've seen much worse, I'd feed it no problem, that's me, others with horses are going to find that this is what is available and that's it. 2nd and 3rd cuts might be delayed, but it's growing quickly so there might be some redemption there, but you never get the same tonnage. We can't complain, rain has been enough to drive you crazy, especially wanting to make use of the outdoors as much as you can, winters always drag on and can be depressing if you are not busy.

We usually have a better balance, but the last 2-3 years have been tough, mid summer 04 was a washout until fall, with all the hurricane remnants, although early season haying was good, 05 was a mix, still saw some good quality hay brought in, but this year was unreal, I've been out in the rural areas and it was the same all over, no one could get out on time, some of the corn was a little too soaked, 7 acres planted here has a few spots in itm, but it's recovered nicely. I think that a lot of the hay out there has finally been brought in around here, just kind of late and not the best being past it's prime, but it's gonna have to do, what else is there, this is nothing compared to those in a drought.

Well Allan, if it was a good year I'd say it was downright pittiful, but over the past couple weeks I've been traveling around a bit, been up to Gillette and down to Colorado Springs. From what I saw both directions I wouldn't complain one bit about your yields.

Not sure what part of the state you're in, but North-Central Kentucky has had enough rain for now. We've had 2 periods of 7 days without rain since April. And it's been almost a week now. It's so humid now that everything is soaked in the morning almost like it had rained. I would have had one of the best crops of tomatoes ever, but the hot humid weather has us over-run with blight. It's 97 degrees with a heat index of 106 right now. I'm headed out to pick tomatoes in a few minutes. Aught to be big fun.

yeah, it's bad all over. I got a short cutting on alfalfa once. The grass hay will never cut a crop and the cane is burning up. Lucky for me, my neighbor has a small piece of alfalfa that he can water. I cut it on shares and just ready to get the 3rd cutting now. I'd be in a world of hurt except for having some carry-over hay and still will be way short.

We've made plenty of hay here in SW OH. Neighbor has a barn full of good first-cutting alfalfa and timothy just waiting for a buyer.

Last year was another story altogether!

Most everyone I would imagine.. Our first cutting was about 6 weeks late from where it should have been, and without some rain real soon, there won't be a second cut..Usually get three.. I know one guy who's baling anything he can get his baler in,and people are lined up to buy it.. if we have a bad winter, price of beef may get a whole lot cheaper..

Nope hay is bad all over the place from what I here. Shoot I had a hose on the garden all last night and theres a wet spot maybe 2 foot square around the end of the hose. You know its dry when the weed as dieing off and welting. I don't know where you are but here at the lake of the ozarks it sure is to hot and to dry.

Most of it is still half full of water and not getting dry fast by any means. Sure wish I could squize the water out of it theres probably enough water in the stuff to cover my garden with 2 or 3 inches of water if it was all pour out at once. Plus this time of the year I don't mess with it because of them copper colored snakes that like to hide under it LOL

LOL, snakes get me every time too - I gave a rubber one to a nephew for XMAS and then uncovered it getting packed to go home. Everyone got a LOL out of it. Have you tried poking holes in the heavy side or rolling them over out in the sun? you don't want them too light or they'b blow away though.

I'd bet some of them are up around 500 lbs if not more from all the water they have in them. I have them stacked every which way but loose and also all over the place. I could probably make a good shed out of the stuff if I have pipe or some type of beams that would hold the weight.

Second and third cuttings here were short, but I don't think as bad as you're saying your's was. I have one neighbor that has just cut twice and has over 2000 round bales and wants someone to put the third up on shares. Talking to people over the country, I hear more stories about too little rain than too much. Checked my corn today and it pollinated okay, but is going to be very light on test weight if it does not rain this week. The early maturing soybean varieties planted early look good, the later ones are podded far apart and have only two beans per pod.
