We've always had spaniels or troublesome mutts my wife couldn't stand like a beagle and a German shorthaired pointer.

But our current springer is 12 year-old retired show dog, and she's basically a doormat.

I bush-hogged one corn patch today because the raccoons had taken every ear of my early corn: that's four, 75 foot rows of it. I harvested 2 1/2 dozen ears in total. Six rows of late corn aren't ready yet, so they're fine.

Live traps take at most two coons per night.

We need a dog as a household pet, companion on a golf cart, occasional upland bird dog and newly, a killer of raccoons.

Years ago we had a 37 pound cocker spaniel b*tch who came to us because "She was killin' ev'ry 'coon in the country!" This was during the days when pelts were valuable. She was a sweet, apparently gentle little dog, but she and her pups had a bloodthirsty streak toward wild animals which was a little hard to believe.

The downside of a family pet which kills wild animals is a wandering dog which comes back loaded with porcupine quills or reeking of skunk, but I think I'm prepared to take the risk, given the raccoon situation.

Any suggestions as to a breed? I'm impressed by border collies, but don't know if a male would be rugged enough to go up against a large raccoon. (There's no water around.) Oh yeah, my wife goes ballistic every time I mention a hound. My dad had a Tennessee coonhound with a magnificent voice and she seemed to think the whole world was her concert hall.

Our pastor has a great little dog on his farm, it's a mountain cur. The thing trees coons, groundhogs, squirrels, whatever. On the family side, it's a sweet calm little dog too. They have even been used to hunt mountain lions. He works with his dogs a lot, and has trained all of them pretty well.

My chocolate lab is a heck of a coon dog. What's nice about him is that he won't go a'chasin unless I give the word. He's 98 lbs of muscle.
Great family pet too, gentle and well behaved. I think just about any medium to large breed dog properly trained and socialized will get er done.
Just be sure to keep up on the rabies shots and give em a good once over when they bring home a coon. My beagle got a nasty abcess once from tangling with a dirty rotten racoon.

Most any breed is a killer if you train them and put them up to it. I had two good border collies and they both were good hunters. They need a job between times though which is why I changed breeds. I wouldn't want any of dog I owned to be always tangling with coons.
Cause even when you win a fight you still get your scrapes and bruises.
Most any dog that will alert you is the ticket. Dog will get the hang of it pretty quick.
Now I have a weak and worthless little rat terrior and don't let her size fool you she is a natural born killer. A coon would be sorry she got a whiff of them. Cause she'd put up a heck of a fuss and I'd be out in a wink with the 20 ga.

I have a beautiful Black-tri male Australian Shep pup about 10 or 11 weeks old. HUGE feet. Gonna be bigger than his(big) dad. Both parents registered. First shots and he has personality to spare. I want to keep him as this is the last pup from the last litter we'll be having but the wife says find him a home. The rest of the litter went for 300 each. The momma is 5 and we'll be getting her spayed in the next few weeks. Yours if you want him. ps...please don't teach him to speak french.....lol jb

I've got a couple lab/walker mixes from the same litter. Always have a dead coon or opossum in the yard.

See if you can find a Chesapeake Bay retriever. Very tough, good-natured dog. Not as popular as Labs as they can be very stubborn. Good around kids and farm animals, but they'll kill any wild critters they can get ahold of.

Chesapeakes were supposedly bred from Newfoundland dogs that were mixed with local hounds in the Virginia tidewater country. The Chesapeake Bay retriever was the first breed recognized by the AKC.

I'm sold on German Shepards, you can train them to do a lot of stuff and they really get attatched to your family. I am expecting a fresh batch of little ones about this weekend. My female is faster and usually catches up with the coon first and slows it down, and the male waits for a back hold, and then administers a whipping motion that really makes you glad it's not your thigh in his jaws. The cats sleep on top of them in the winter and one hen shares the doghouse with Lucy. Saw a funny dog trick today, this dirty biker's pit bull would just explode barking and growling whenever you give her the finger!

I have had border collies and they had no trouble killing coons. They are very quick and get behind and pin the coon to the ground and go up and down the spine crunching bones. Sounds like crushing a bag of potato chips. They need a job like herding if they don't have one they will find one maybe not what you want. I haven't heard of them being used for upland game hunting.

What I like about border collies is their intelligence and optimism. I wonder if keeping squirrels out of a grove of black walnuts would be a sufficient challenge for a collie? I've been doing the Elmer Fudd bit ever since I planted eight acres of seeds last fall.

I suspect a male border might fill the bill on the property when the spaniel passes on. If the dog is smart enough to train my wife to accept him, he'll be in clover.

Thanks for the advice.

Rod

Well I know one but most people that don't know them think they are bad dogs and are not safe to own. But to me hands down a Pitbull puppy trained the correct way will fit your bill and a coon would be nothing to one. I have 3 that are 50-75% pit but are more house dogs then out door dogs. My last good out door pit died a few years ago and he would take on a beaver, yep he kill the beaver but thebeaver almost killed him. We could even pick him up to take to the vet because when we tried he shot blood out of one leg. He layed around for about a week and we feed/watered him right where he was and not long after he was back to his old self and doing his job again

HOLY SMOKES old........... in reply to old, 07-31-2006 15:41:10
You supprise me.:-) I think a "properly trained" and socialized pitbull is one of the nicest and most awesome dogs there are. Extremely inteligent and just about as loyal as a border collie.

I have an altered male heeler mix right now and have just got the offer to take on a pitbull/rottweiler altered female. Both are about 10 months old. Thinking I might have to put up with 2 pains.:-)

I really like the border collies too, but I cant take the long hair.

What because I know a good breed of dog. Shoot I have had pure pits or part pits since 1980 and all have been very good dogs. They are smart if it trained right make good hunting dogs, house dogs and even bird/rabbit dogs. My first pit was a female that was around 90lbs and she was the best dog I have ever had and very well trained to boot. She would do things just by me pointing my finger or fingers no talking just the finger signs

Awe heck no, not cause you know a smart breed. It's just so rare to find anyone anymore, especially in agriculture that has anything good to say, or any good experiences with pits. That's why the supprise.

Do you ever visit the pitbull breeders forum? Some pretty good info and stories on there.

Nope didn't even know there was one. The dog I have now most people thing aren't even pit in any way, they look more like wiener dogs. LOL My favorite one is probably going to die soon because he has a big lump on the side of his neck and we figure its a tumor and I know I sure don't have the money to have it removed. We call him Dozer becuase he will doze trough any thing be it cat, dog and weeds etc. He also sleeps in bed with me and my wife. Sure would hate to see some one brake in to the house at night they would meet 3 dogs and a 44mag

Here's the link.

I doubt you'll need the 44. But, I to have a .45 auto close enough that if they do get through the dog, that's as far as they'll get.

My Dad had a half Lab half German Shepard that took on a Bobcat. It came out a draw but you had to admire her spunk. It took her a few months but she cleaned out the varmits from coming to the house at night.
