Super A wiring diagram/6volt to 12 volt

Need help with wiring diagram. I followed instructions giving from a previous post but must have something crossed as the resistor is getting mighty HOT, along with the coil. I have a Super A with a push/pull on/off switch an ampmeter and a light switch with three positions. The coil has both positive and a negative connections. The altenator only has on connection point. Can someone give me step by step directions that might be easier to follow for wiring this tractor? It has been converted from 6 volt to 12 volt. Thanks.

Robert, If thats a One Wire Alternator as your post suggests, its output wires to the Load (NOT to battery/starter) side of the ammeter. That same Load side ammeter terminal is what provides input voltage to loads like the BAT input terminal on any light or ignition switches. The ammeters other Supply side terminal gets fed from the hot ungrounded battery post, usually via the big batery cable terminal on a starter switch. From the IGN output terminal on the ignition switch should first be the external Ballast Resistor (assuming you have one) and then the coils high side input terminal, which should be + on a Negative grounded tractor. The coils other - terminal is what wires to the distributor. If youre running the original 6 volt coil and an external ballast resistor, the ballast normally gets quite hot but the coil should only be warm. If the ballast is wired correct in series before the coil AND IF ITS THE CORRECT OHMS RESISTANCE, the coil shouldnt be so hot you cant lay your hand on it, only warm as mentioned.

This all assumes you mean its the Ballast thats hot instead of any light switch resistors, is that what you meant????? If you used to have a genny with a 2 wire cutout relay and the light switch field current control system, that resistor/terminal should not be used if you changed to an alternator. This also assumes its a One Wire alternator as you indicated and it was converted to negative ground as most all alternators are.

Yes I think I meant ballast resitor white ceramic thing with spring running in it and a cotton rope running through the spring. I have one wire running from the altenator (only one terminal) to the ammeter. The other side of the ammeter has a wire coming from the ignition switch and one going to the headlight switch. Yhe other side of the ammeter is going directly to the starter where the big positive battery cable is attched. Also have the other side of the ignition switch going to the resistor which has in its line the ballast resitor then on the the positive side of the coil. Negative side of the coil is going to the distributor. Battery is negative ground. How do I know which side of the ammeter is the load and which is the supply, does it make a difference? Also, how do I wire the lights? Thanks.

The ammeter isnt wired correct because alllll lllll loads like the feeds to ignition or light switches (their BAT input terminals) PLUS the wire to the ammeter must alllll ll be attached to one side (Load side) while the ONLY wire on the other terminal (Supply side) should be that one to the starter/battery on the starter switch where the big battery cable is. If an ammeter is wired correct, if you switch on lights or ignition not running it should swing over to - discharge but then after running (if charging system works) it should swing over to + charge. HOWEVER if it does bass ackwwards of that, simply reverse the leads. On a Negative ground I would expect the ammeters Supply side labeled + with its Load side labeled -

To wire the lights, the switches BAT input terminal would be wired n fed from the ammeters load terminal (same side that wires to alternator) with its lights output termianl wired to the lights to feed them voltage when ON.

It sounds like your ammeters Load terminal has 3 wires, one to the alternator one to light switch one to ignition switch while its Supply side ought to have but one wire, to the battery cable terminal on the starter switch.

From what your saying you have a 1 wire alternator and tha is the easies set up there is. You run the wire from the alternator to the battery or amp gauge which ever you want. Because the amp gauge should also have a wire going to the battery any how so its sort of the same place any how. As far as the ballast resistor getting hot yep they will thats sort of how it works. Now the coil should get warm but not so hot you can't touch it. Also you need to switch the wires on the coil so the + side goes to the switch and the - side goes to the distubutor. You also have to have the battery hooked up for - ground or the alternator will fry
