I have a 1999 Honda Recon (250cc) that is giving me major fits. Seems everytime you even think of hitting a puddle of water, the atv will start sputering, missing, backfiring, and major loss of power. Used to be, all I'd have to do is just go slow and let it "dry" out. Last week I hit a couple deep holes and now all I can get it to do is idle, if I try to give it gas it dies. I also have problems during winter with the same atv, if I keep the throttle wide open it runs fine, but the second I let off it'll die and doesn't want to start. I'm thinking there may be water in the fuel and ignition system, but all the connections seem tight and dry. Is it possible the water/ cold air is cooling the engine off to much? Anyone have ideas for me to try before I take it to the atv doc? Thanks for any help.

Drain everything, carb, rubber boots, fuel, line etc.Seal airbox last.If you have drained the carb already and its still rough check for an air leak by spraying WD 40 around intake manifold. Also make sure entire carb is tight.I found my O-ring seal was never in the groove from the factory and eventually got loose and sucked air.No O-ring in my misc. kit was exactly the same so I made a cork gasket. The only easy way to work on carb is to remove the air box.Otherwise I couldnt even tell if it was allen wrench or phillips head.Without airbox hands fit everywhere and eyes can see.Leave all cables to carb connected while doing this. Its time to drain your fuel out and start fresh or more water will just get in [from fuel tank to carb].If you went through something like a river water is in airbox too probably.

Don't know Rich, but for me Honda engines like gas that's fresh and has ZERO water in it.

I'm guessing that when you hit the "deep holes" last week, somehow water got in the fuel. Does running the choke on help at all, or does it just die with this too? In the winter, do you keep the tank completly full except when it's running? It's amazing how much condensation forms on the inside when it's cold.

Keep in mind this is all just a guess, but try completly draining, flushing, and refueling before you take it to someone that's not essactly cheap for work.

Good luck,

This izz what I call a puddle of water. Make sure you air box drain izz open. Use sum dielectric grease on the plug wire conections, pleanty of it and on elictrical conections also Permatex # 22058

Sounds to me like you have an air leak between your carb and the cylinder. When the engine is idling it does fine but if it starts to speed up it sucks air and dies. Check this by spraying wd-40 around the intake manifold between the carb and cylinder while it is idling. If it speeds up you have your problem figured out.
