Cpl Loveless was a medic serving in Iraq and was awarded a bronze star for his efforts in saving several lives, including those of the enemy. In particular, he was cited for saving the life on an enemy sniper. A few days later aother sniper got him.

Our club has arranged for a tree to be planted in his memory at our new local library. We need ideas for some kind of monument to go with the tree to explain that the tree was planted in his memory. It is a sign of the times, that the monument needs to be vandal resistant.

So far, we have two ideas: 1. A bronze plaque embedded in concrete or epoxied to a stone. 2. A large stone with the message engraved in it.

You guys have any other ideas?

Thanks.

I'm an ex-cop and had a fellow officer murdered while on duty. Long story short we named a street after him. To this day I cannot go by that street without tears in my eyes. Also, I'm not a real religious guy but the following seems to apply in this case:

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13).

Richard, plant a Oregon Spruce, or an Oak tree with a plaque indicating tree is name Cpl Loveless.
When I was with 101st,at Fort Campbell, KY. The 502nd Airborne Battle GRP had a tree named for a Medel of Honor winner "Joe Mann Tree" and a parade field named "Cole Field" after another Medel of Honor winner.

Here in Umatilla county we renamed a county road "Speerman Rd" after a young man that lived on the road and became a MIA in Veitnam, His family lived just up the road from us.

Monument makers can engrave images. How about one of a medic putting a bandage on a kids arm or a GI giving a candy bar to a kid. An image you would never see say in the NY Times.

How about having his bust on the plaque, that way there is a face to the name. I think people may be able to identify more with a visual image than just a name.
Sorry to hear about the loss of what sounds like a fine young man, but I'm glad to hear he is being remembered.

The family of a local boy who was KIA in Iraq last October, recently dedicated a fine memorial to those who gave all here in Pennsylvania. It is on the grounds of a large local cemetary in town. It is close enough to the main street that it should be difficult to vandalize without being caught. And the entire loss so emotional for so many that I wouldn't want to be the one foolish enough to try. This has several bronze plaques as to those who served and one in perticular to the young man (19 years old) who was killed along with 2 other soldiers when their tank hit a mine in the road while they were doing escort duty. When I get a chance I'll try to get some pictures of the monument to post. It is quite striking.
