Good lokking corn. This picture reminded me of something I wanted to ask you fellas. All my life around and looking at corn fields, I have noticed on many, if not all, have stunted corn plants around some of the corners and edges. Many times the rest of the plants are quite a few feet taller. Any of y'all know what that is from? Just something I have thought about off and on.

Take care y'all,
George

George in Biloxi: corn stunted around the edges is from several things. 1. Too close to grass etc. in fencerow which sucks up more water. 2. Fertilizer and pre-emergence doesn't reach the outer rows. 3. The end rows get more compaction because of the turning around - used to be worse when we cultivated. 4. Bugs more diverse and more numbers along the edge and like fertilizer and pre-emergence, insecticieds often are not sprayed right to the edges.

Most likely because of the competition from the grass (or weeds in some cases) growing right up to the edge of the first row of corn. The grass has a good established root system where the corn has to start from a seed, the grass can then suck all the early moisture and nutrients up while the corn struggles. Once you get in a row or two it is just soil between the rows so the corn only competes with the neighbor plant, not a rowful of grass or weeds.

I was half-seriously figuring in my head what the return on investment would be to clear an acre or two of my woods to plant corn for ethanol :)

(I want to clear it eventually *anyway*)

Sort of spotty on the rain though. I am in a drier area of KY. The rain usually goes either north or south of me. Still a bit better than last year though.

We've been blessed here in Northern Ky. We've had good rains when we needed them. Best crop year in years. Just a blessing and we should thank God for that.
