Well, Maybe

But, I'll be darned if I'm gonna drain 30 gallons of fuel and pull a silly fuel tank just because 6 little pushrods don't wanna fit.

Set the head on the block cross-wise with no gasket, pushed 'em up thru the bottom of the head, tied 'em off and then pulled the head back around square to the world.

Now, I gotta lift the whole shootin' match up and slide that gasket under there. should be done by Christmas. :>)

Grandpa always said "There's more than one way to skin a cat..." There's nothing at all wrong with using your head and being a little unorthodox on occasion, especially if it works.....That said, look at a manual for a B series Cummins sometime. They have a special tool that you stick through the holes in the block after you take the cam out that allows you to take the lifters out and then put them back in without taking the head off. To hold them in place when you take the cam out you put sticks in each set and then band them together just like you did your rods. Once the cam is out you push the one tool in where the cam once was and use another tool with a string to lower the lifters down into the first tool. Going back you just reverse the proceedure. Like I said, check out a manual if you ever get a chance and you'll see another really unorthodox proceedure.

Allan,
I reckon you like a challenge! I reckon you should have let them tyres down so that would have lowered the block height just fine!!!!
Personally, I wouldn"t have risked damaging the head gasket and having to do it all again - been there, done that.
Next time you have her apart, skim a few thou from the head - that will make it easier!!
Regards, RAB

Theirs four bolts that hold the front tank suport to the clutch houseing, if you loosen them up some and raise the front of the tank up gives you a little more added clearence .

I'm sure that I'm missing something, but I can't get my mind around the fact that if you got it all apart without pulling the tank, why would you have the trouble going back together. It was a great solve on your problem, though. Don't know if I'd come up with that in a million years.

DR,

There just is no room in there and the gizmo came apart out sideways with a shoehorn and cuss marks.

The prefered method is to have that tank out of the way, use long guide bolts and drop everything straight down on the head.

'Course, I never would listen to reason anyway.

Kinda like puttin' a clutch in a 4X4. I always thought that it was a lot easier to pull the engine than come at 'er from the back end.

Allan,

That's a mighty nice shop...what with the knotty pine paneling and all. Looks good!

Thanks Nathan,

I took some 6" tongue and groove stuff and spent one winter nailin' the stuff up. Always wanted a knotty pine walled, grey floor shop.

Yes Sir,

I had to take all the fuel tank heat shielding out from underneith to get some room, so what you're seeing is the actural bottom of the tank.

That's factory primer.

Don't mind tellin' ya, Boys,

That was a squeeze! Still had to lift the front left corner of that tank a 1/4" before I could get the thing to slide in under those pushrods on the back cylinder.

But, that bugger is in there! :>)

Okay, now I gotta go dress some rockers, then the fun really starts..... ..... tippin' those goofy rocker stands and bolts into place. That's gonna be another fun ordeal. They don't fit under there either. :>)

That's thinking Allan, heck I did drain the 30 gal of diesel and remove the tank to put the head back on my 560D. I wish I had thought of that !

Had to pull all the heat shielding; that gave me another inch or so.
