Ok...this is going to sound lame...but I gotta ask....
I just got back from a trip and went to use the 05 Explorer...it ran rough...not bad...just not normal.
It is still under warrenty so since I was still on vacation, I took it back to Ford.
It needed a service anyway.
They said the fuel filter was plugged. Ok, 18,000 miles but...I said to change it, service the vehicle and do what it needed.
They hit me for 58 dollars for a fuel filter. Ok...I got burned...so be it.
I noticed last night when I filled the tank...the fuel gage came up real slow...not fast like it used to.
Could the guy have messed up something? Is the filter in the tank on this thing or on the frame? It seems to be ok...it just acts a little strange after fillup.
I want the car right as the better half uses it a lot. If it were the old Dodge diesel I would look at it...but this thing is a mess of wires and gizmos.
Any help is appreciated.

I have a 2000 Explorer and the filter is located in the frame right under the drivers feet. It was a bear to get the clips to release. It uses a dual clip design where a second safety clip is installed parallel to the garter clip. It requires a special tool to release the clip so if you did it yourself you probably would have spent in the neighborhood of $40 for filter and tool. The filter itself was $20 at a parts store so I imagine it was more at the dealer. I guess that $58 is about average for the job.

I stopped at the dealer and thought I would buy a new oil drain plug for this car. They wanted $14.85 for just the plug. Wow! I ended up down the street at Autozone and got it for $5.

Thanks Vern,
That car has about run me ragged going to the dealer. It has all been under warranty...but it's a pain.
First the rear end started making noise...recall Ford did not tell anyone about. A lot of the gears were cut wrong.
Then I had to take it back for a transmission lube recall...they forgot an additive...I ask why not just add it in...nope...no dipstick. Drain it all and refill. Dumb French made transmission.
Then the seat started coming apart at the seams. Had to get it fixed.
Washing it one day and noticed a reflector in a head light had come loose and was flopping around in the plastic housing...back to Ford.
It needed a front end alignment at 12,000. Tire was wearing on the outer edge. Yep..they fixed it after I spent 140 dollars on an alignment cam that was not adjustable like the older ones.
Now the strange acting fuel gauge. I am starting not to like this car. But, I cannot have the better half running out of gas in downtown Houston.
Might be time to look at another car....

I doubt that they dropped the tank for $58 so it has to be on the rail. They also have an anti slosh module on the instrument cluster that does go bad. The entire cluster has to be replaced as it is soldered in.

I used to be Ford fan, thought they could do no wrong, but I was proven wrong. O.K., back to G.M.,I quickly found out they have their own special set of serious quality problems. So far, the '06 Durango has been trouble free, relatively speaking. Only time will tell.

I used to think the same way about GM...until the problems I had in the 70's with transmissions and paint.
Had Ford pickups until dad convinced me to try a Dodge with a Cummins.
That horse just goes and goes. Just brought back about 22,000 lb of trailer and old iron from Indiana...with 253K on the watch she still purred like a kitten.
But, I have been told the newer ones have their problems too. Guess I will keep the old goat and try and find her a car.
