Have been to a few shows this summer and have noticed that a lot of guys are using stainless bolts on different parts of there tractors and they are leaving them unpainted, just wondering what your opinion is on the unpainted stainless fastners. Like them or not, would you use them.

All of the answers regarding strength, galling, and paint retention are exactly correct. Personally, I only use stainless where these limitations are NOT a factor on MY 'keeper'/working tractors. BUT I DO replace ANY fastener with stainless where I consider it appropriate. They DO have their place on the ranch. ESPECIALLY on implements and accessories.

The other posts make good points. The stainless bolts you find normally are not that stong. They are ok for sheet metal etc.
Galling is a problem if you thread stainless into stainless. You have to use antiseize compound. using standard nuts on stainless bolts helps. I have seen stainless nuts spun on by hand that seized when remmoving.

At a recent tractor ride a guy had stainless bolts on his double bevel wheels and they all needed cut out because they galled up when tightening or loosening them. Not a good Idea unless you go to a higher grade of stainless. They are a pretty weak bolt, even though they look good.

I use them for some of the final assembly on restored tractors.

When I paint the tractor is in pieces and trying to assemble and keep the paint on fasteners is next to immposible. If used sparingly I think it makes a nice accent also. If every last fastener is shiny it just looks to flashy to me.

Keep in mind that restorations are still a personal preference thing.

I prefer the hardened bolts.. like gr8 that have the plating 'look' to them vs stainless.

Stainless has a bad tendency to gall and become a mess if yuo encounter any problems.. and is just as difficult to drill out.... so might as well go for gr8 if you are paying the extra money anyway.

Good for show but for the most part the alloy used in stainless fasteners is pretty soft and they won"t hold the torque of standard stuff.

I use them on restored tractors and not doctored tractors. They just seem to make more sense because of the nature of stainless steel. I know many people are quick to point out that stainless is wrong on a restored tractor but I think stainless is a beneficial upgrade.

I would use stainless on my doctored tractors. Would not use them on a restored tractor.

The regular stainless bolts aren't very strong, something like grade 2 or so. The problem drilling/ cutting is they work harden very easily and get hard to cut.
