I had a 05 dodge 3500 with a 6 speed that would cross the mountain with trailer and 10,000# of tractors at around 55 mph in 4th. I traded for a 06 with a auto and it will only cross at 45 with same trailer and tractors. now the ????? should there be that much difference or do I have a problem?Has anyone else had this much difference? thanks

I've got a '06 3500 that with an auto trans. Pulls my 34' gooseneck with ease in drive. Last fall , with about 700 miles on the truck, I pulled my daughters 3 horse trailer and two horses from NE IL to her place in Virginia Beach, Virginia and I dont think it downshifted 6 times going through the mountains. Only used the trailer tow button once, then found I didn't really need it. I just put a C&N air filter package on it and seems to have improved the milage by around 2 mpg. +or-.

Well first off you need to push the button on the end of the shifter twice until the light on the dash indicates the overdrive is off. That said, you should only need the OD off at the lower speeds you are talking about, if you were running 70 you could run in OD on the hills, and definetly on the flat. With OD disengauged you should be able to have the same performance as the other truck when it was in 4th. If you don't you need to have it checked out. I have had both trucks, I've had the older NV5600 transmission, I've had the newer G56 trans, and I've had the 48re automatic as well. The 48re should and will perform just as good as the manual transmission up to about 12,000lbs or so, heavier than that the auto will won't hang with the 6-speed, but close. I am a Dodge and Chevrolet dealer by the way.

730-LP,One other point that dove tails into 504-1 post, Those who have HD 4x4 pickup with Manuel hubs. Know this trick.....Leave your Hubs in the "Free" position, then put the Transfer case into "Low" Then you can get out of tough pulling situations with releative pulling ease.
On the high side of transfer case the ratio is usually 1:1 , on the Low side it is usually 2:1 so you effectivly double the rearend ratio so to speak by useing the low side. The MPH will top out at about 40/45. So in mountainous situations you still have power, and you can pull a load without melting down a tranny, or burning up a clutch. I have used this technique many times and will work very well, just do not over rev the engine.
Hope this helps, Good Luck.
Later,
John A.

This may sound dumb but were the tire sizes the same on both trucks? the reason I say this is that when we got our 96 3500 it has 215's on it and would never even think about bogging with a load. Needed new tires and all that was available ( needed them that day) were 235's. made a noticable difference in the towing ability.

Look at the sticker inside the glove box for the gear ratio...

I knew a guy that had to get a tow up Grapvine hill out on the left coast. When he got home he put a 5 speed in it,said he could at least slip the clutch and gain a few feet if he had to.(30ft goose neck trailer)
