Hi Guys,

Switched the air conditioner on the combine over to 134a, threw in some freon and she works like a new one. Took all of about 7 minutes.

'Course I had to stop and unplug those silly evaperator drains; had water running all over the darned place. :>(

Trouble is, worked myself out of a job and now I think I'm going to be forced to clean out the darned grain bin. 'Nother one of my "favorite" jobs. :>(

I remember the days in the 60's doing "summer till" in western nebraska with the wind blowing the dust all over me without a cab. I was a teenager and having a great time just driving a tractor. My bath water (no we didn't have a shower) was muddy brown each night! Aren't cabs and air conditioning great?!!

Kinda OT but back in 1973 Dad bought a NEW Gleaner G' with cab and AC. He then went to the Farmers Union CO-OP store and bought a big honkin 220V window AC unit for the house. When Mom asked what for he replied "Ya don't think I'm gonna sit in that nice cool cab all day long and then come into a hot house do ya" #@&**%%#@ LOL

We had been running a A and a CII open stations which he traded in on the new G.

Good job. That AC makes all the difference when you're in the sun and heat. Now, it's time to perfect that bin AC. I just finished emptying ours out yesterday morning. Plenty hot in there.

That's good on the AC Allan. Funny when it starts raining in the cab like that huh? You'll be wishing for cold in that grain bin lol. Too bad you aren't closer and would loan you a old exhaust fan I used for cleaning out silos. Just open the top lid and then put the air over by the door. Think that fan is about to go in the shop though for welding fumes.

If you fix the AC in the grain bin that would help ??? right??---do you vaccum the system or just drain and add the 134a? I changed my pic-up over to 134a last week for the nice warm weather we are having-- works good --I pumped it down first

Hi Dave,

This old machine has been setting since forever in a shed; at least 10 years or more.

When I cracked the port, I heard the tinyest "pfft" and there wasn't even enough of the old stuff left in 'er to register on the gauge.

So, I just put in one can, the pressure switch snapped closed, the compressor clutch came on and I then just used the engine to pull in the rest.

Darned thing is building ice all the way from the compressor to the expansion valve and the compressor is cycling in time with the temp contol, so seems to be working pretty darned good. :>)

You did evacuate the system, and add some Polyol Ester oil, to go along with the R-134, right?

We have 19 grain bins varying in size from 5000 bushel to 1350 and they are all metal and they all get swept out once a year. BUT, it doesn't ever happen on a day that is 100 degrees. BTW we have had a lot of "hot and dry" in SW Manitoba since July 1.
