Of Tim's Truck and TAs...

Half napping this afternoon...

For some reason I really don't want to think to hard why Tim's truck was in my dreams.

But it did make me wonder why there is a Torque Amplifier like system for pickups to give the pull power to get started or go slow off-road...but use high gear ratios for general purpose on highway use for mileage.

I guess it wouldn't save enough gas to justify the cost...but jeepers, you see so many RV Queens out there that pull a camper or boat a handful or two of weekends a year and are a daily commuter the rest of the time.

(Side rant...I can't stand the ratio in my '03 Ranger stick shift because it doesn't go slow enough to control off-road with tire spin and riding the brake unless I put it in 4-Lo...)

High and low range. Well, to be useful in offroad applications, low range is important since it allows you to go slow and crawl over things, and in order for the engine to make power, it need to be in the engines "powerband", in other words, at idle an engine doesn't make much power, but if you gear it so the engine can gain some rpms, then it can make full power for you offroad to enable the truck to be very useful. real heavy pulling is something else low range is good for. Think of your old tractor pulling something heavy, the higher a gear you use the less you can pull with it. Nebraska tractor tests will show the big differences different gears will make in the maximum drawbar pull of a particular machine. You want to put different gears in your truck?, get on the phone with Jegs, Summit Racing, Ford Racing, etc..., they got the kits to change the gears to most anything you could want. Shame on you for dreaming about his sister sitting in the cab next to you grinning from ear to ear while you were grabbing gears in a big mud hole listening to that 360 scream as mud flew in all directions?. I've had automotive dreams before too, one car that I had several dreams that I can recall is of the Steeda Q400 Mustang, it was based on a bright yellow and black 2004 GT, that got upgraded with Steeda parts, you bought a new Mustang GT from Ford and then sent it to Steeda for the upgrades, anyways, I kept seeing the Steeda ads on the back cover of the Mustang magazines which they ran for quite awhile, and it kinda stuck in my mind I guess, so, I ended up driving it in my dreams. Need to get with the times and start dreaming about that new Shelby GT500 Mustang they got out now.

Cheer up, I bought a used (97) club cab Chevy S-10 for mileage (my 3/4 ton Chevy gets 10mpg,empty or loaded)..... I think my S-10 is constipated, it won"t pass a thing!! Five speed takes some getting used to also, gears are VERY CLOSE together ! Cheers!! Jim B.

Maybe a GearVendors overdrive unit. Pricey, but sure would make a different truck out of it. Probably should've mentioned this under Tim's question about mileage.

I put an over-drive unit ahead of the 4 speed manual transmission in my 88 one ton-- built a strong 454 -4:10 gears empty it gets a little over 10 MPG and it cuts the RPM down from 2800 to 2200 at 60MPH--plus it splits gears when I have a load behind it--the OD unit was $1300 plus shortening the drive shaft
