Anybody out there own one. Pros and cons, maintenance, reliability. I am getting close to retirement and I will be moving out of the clogged area that is around me now and moving to a much less populated area. The area I have been looking at is in the mountains and there are many new and used log homes for sale, some in isolated areas. Should I consider the log home or buy a piece of land and build a regular house with siding or brick. I know the realitors will tell you anything to get a sale. Thats why I'm asking someone with hands on experience.

My wife and I live in a log home we built three years ago. We hired a company to do the shell and the steel roof and did the rest ourselves. It's the best thing I've ever done. Both of us dreamed of living in a log home our whole lives. Our house is in the middle of our property, surrounded by woods on all sides. When I get up in the morning and look out the window, the only thing I can see are trees, it's great. You do have to treat logs homes and keep them sealed properly to keep moisture and bugs out of the wood. We have an oil based product on ours. The first coat lasts 1-2 years and it's due for another real soon. Subsequent coast last 6-8 years.

For used log homes, I'd find a local company that builds them and find out how reliable they are by calling some of their customers. Like any other business, some are more trustworthy than others. If you go the used route, I would hire that company to inspect the home to see if it's been maintained and have them check the condition of the logs. A regular home inspector can do the rest of the home. Logs can be replaced if rotted, but if properly maintained, a log home will as long or longer than a stick built. Good luck

I don't live in one, but I have seen pellets that are put into the ends of the logs that diffuse chemicals through the wood to prevent rot so I guessing rot could be something to look out for where water can land on the logs and follow it into a corner.

Rich,

My wife and I have lived in a log home for the past 13 years and I wouldn't do anything else. Like tractors, so much depends on how it was made and how it was maintained over the years. The amount of maintainence depends on how it was constructed. I would suggest you pick up a copy of Log Home Living magazine and start reading through a few copies, your head will spin, but you will have an idea of what your looking at and why some are so much more expensive than others. Good luck with your search, you have to live in one for awhile to appreciate what everyone else misses out on..

Joe
