Ok, anyone know which side of a manifold gasket faces outward against the cast iron exhaust manifold, metal or non-metal side out ? This is on a 292 Y-block Ford.

Did you have the manifold surfaced?

Might have to, really funny how now I've got leaks in other spots where none were before.

I used mutiple flange gaskets at pipe connections, then replaced the heat riser valve with a 1/2" steel plate, 2 gaskets either side, carefully bolted and tighten everything, the left manifold was a pain to get the bolts started, ( chased and cleaned all holes with a tap as well )
Then I tightened everything gradually and evenly, I had a leak at the heat riser and front manifold port that was cracked, now on the opposite side ( drivers side ) I have a leak, seems to be at the manifold port, I cleaned the mating surfaces of both the head and the manifold, one needed some minor filing to remove some rust and flatten, tightened them after it ran awhile, still some leaks, weird I tell you, might have to pull er apart a 3rd time and double the manifold gaskets up, don't want to overtighten and crack the manifolds

Stainless side of the gasket toward the manifold.

Thanks Greg, that is how they are installed, been struggling to quiet this exhaust down, new gaskets, mating surfaces were cleaned, new flange gaskets etc. still hear some ticking,(leaks) have to get er hot and see, have ran it a little and re-tightened, thought I may have had them backwards.
