I was just reading on the internet news where a Transportation Co bought a #255 hog at the Fair in Casper,Wyo. for two hundred $ a pound. Now trying to pay less. I guess the DA that bought it thought they were paying two hundred $ for the hog period. I do believe peiople should do their homework before they jump into something like that. The 9 year old that sold it is not upset though.

What does DA stand for? in reply to Jimmy King, 07-20-2006 11:57:32
Can ya tell I'm not big into auctions?

Can't figure out what "DA" is an abbreviation for...I get that it's the buyer, though...

I actually Googled "Auctioning Terms DA" trying to figure it out!!!

The same thing happened at our county fair several years ago and a fellow paid about $400/lb for a lamb thinking he was paying $400 for the lamb. His name is still on our price leader board and will probably stay for a while longer. The person who had bought the grand champion lamb for several years before, stayed with him until the last bid. The winning bidder was bidding $25 and $50 a wack. The runner up bidder was bidding $0.50 and $1.00 a bid!!

4H livestock just about always brings ultra high premium prices. Those bids are usually placed by people who want to reward the kids for doing a good job. Those people might be the banker, where the kids father does business, the owner of the feed store where the feed was purchased, the owner of the store where the kids dad buys the farm equipment, or a host of others. Those big dollars are awarded to the 4Her to be used for a college education, or invested back into livestock, hopefully as a way of keeping the farm kids involved in agriculture.

Wonder who all the DA's are who can't figure out what was going on at this auction. As you show winners always bring a lot more per pound than the norm. Like you said a bank, feed store, poltician, any number of people who could afford the price and wanted the free publicity that goes along with having the winning bid. And it is probably done as a donation for tax purposes.

Makes you wonder who was bidding against him. Maybe the second bidder will still take it for $50,999

It pays to listen to the terms before you start bidding. I don't know how many times I've heard choice and some DA thought they were buying the lot. 255 * 200 = $51,000, I bet that 9 year old is smiling.
