OT Hooking up dual RV batteries

My two different-sized camper batteries are finally shot (used to use one at a time) and I am going to buy a matched set to hook up in parrallel. I think I know what to do, but I am checking the collectively astounding wisdom of YT bulletin board to make sure.

Connect the batteries with a cable positive-to-positive, then negative-to-negative, then attached the leads from the camper to the respective + and - terminals of one of the batteries.

Correct?

Thanks.

Use a diode isolator that RV types of places sell.
Use that for isolating the charging circuit and use a switch to switch between the two batteries for the output side to your 12 v devices. These high power battery selector switches are available from marine supply places.

Your straight paralell method will work , but I think you will like the switched method better.
with the batteries in pure paralell if one goes bad it can drain the other one. also you won't have to worry about replacing them in pairs.

Well that did not work out right so.

Here is a link to some isolators and switches.

Look at the hellroaring automatic isolator. It connects the tow vehicle to the camper battery only when the tow vehicle is charging with almost no voltage drop. At least it looks good on their web page and is simpler to hook up than a diode isolator or an ignition powered relay.

Be sure to make the charging wire significant size if you want to charge rapidly and to put a fuse at both ends of the charge wire so protect the rig from shorts in the wire with power available at both ends (the batteries).

IH,

Whith the system you describe, are you saying you can switch between the two batteries for output to the camper, but when I fire up the generator, both batteries will be charging?

Yes, that is how it would work. You could run one battery down, switch to the other one and run the charge at the same time, if you wanted.

YUP
But if you have room you're bette off with one big battery. Because with two when one goes down it will drag the other down too.
