You can try whatever you like. I had one here that sat for over a year with various things in it, starting with various solvents from a can, then on to tranny fluid, and then brake fluid. I'm a big beliver in a properly sized block of wood and an 8# sledge. They never say no to that. Just protect the crank journals... or remove the crank first.
I talked to an old guy who landed in my yard the other day. He had freed an "H" with WD40 or some such thing, and he took his time and he worked at it, and he prayed for it. Then he had to put rings in it anyway. So, by th etime he bought the rings and gaskets separately, he would have been close to the cost of a complete engine kit.... That's the deal with my "860", so the pistons got driven out. If you had a more valuable, or less common engine, or one that you couldn't get parts for, then I would take a more delicate approach. However, where the parts are common a dirt, I'd drive them out. That's just my take on it.

I use vinegar myself. It disolves rust, something kroil and others can't claim.

As Van said I would. Use tranny fluid. So far only one out of like 10 engines it didn't work for me. Plus and heres the big thing, you can buy a case or so of tranny fluid for what you will pay for the Kroil

Kroil will work good. Old will tell you to use tranny fluid, which works good too. Marvel Mystery oil works also.

Use whatever you want. Depending on how bad the engine is stuck, anything you use might work, or possibly nothing will work. What worked for one may not work for another, and just because it didn't work on one doesn't mean it won't work on another.

Be sure that what you use cannot do further damage. Kroil is OK to use. Kroil will not cause quick damage. Kroil will eat through the can after several years. Vinegar is not good for aluminum and is very bad for magnesium.

Marvel Magic Mystery oil or transmission fluid are my favorites.
