People wait till the min that they want to go to the fields with the combine then call on the hottest day of the year to get there old combine going . Had two to work on today , one has not been used for two years and the last thing it did was corn and not cleaned out . Should have taken my pistol with me for that one there must have been forty rats come out of it . The other one was my old 410 and my buddys kid was running it and kept plugen it i can not get it thru his thick head that it is not a duel porpose machine . It is not a mowen machine and combine all rolled into one as he was tryen to cut the wheatand straw 4 inches off the ground and feed all the straw thru it so he did not have to mow the straw . THe wheat is chest high to me . i ran one round in second gear about half way on the varible speed and it ran fine but the stubel was over knee high . and Andy was wineing about haveing to go back and mow it down . As for me i would rather run thru the crop and get all that i can then go mow the stubel and not have to clear a pluged combine for two hours in the hot sun.

thats normal and some guys really don't need to even be around or own machines but that the way it is. Combine will cut wheat or samll grain close to th ground if it is clean and you have the cylinder set correctly and you slow it down some. I do it all the time just got done 50 acres rye which is usually as tall as me in alot of years and oats just did fir another felow yeaterday and shave it also. I market small bales of straw year around and it is more valuable to me then the grain is. yes you can do it that way if you have things set right. 95% of the time in my experience it is operator error that plug machines not the combines fault. Its same with planters in the spring etc they always want it the day before or day they try go to field and i doesn't plant. That will never change just human nature I geuss

Tractor vet,
I had the same problem as what you went thru today. I sold my 410 to an old friend few years back seems like every time I turn around he wants me to get it ready for him or work on it. I did help him out for a while I even ran the machine for him that one season.
This year he raised wheat and he been pluging up the combine every twenty feet. He trying to run thisles that almost over my head I"m 6"1. I told him to go around the thistle patches and just run the wheat that was free from weeds. Well, He told me he wanted to get as much of the wheat that he could did"t want to leave it in the feild.
Now I gave up from there. The temperature outside this afternoon was 95. The air conditioner not working on it. I"m thinkin it probably and wire chewed from the mice? It"s hot enought in that cab when the engine right beside you. Dehydrate fast setting in that cab as hot as it was.
Far as I know it"s probably pluged up again by now?
Thought it was the best idea at the time. Oh well.
Mike

It's pretty obvious that these people don't repair their own machines. A mowing machine and what little extra fuel it takes sure beats wearing out an expensive combine to cut straw down.If he thinks he is saving time, show him how fast you can combine if you only cut just below the heads like a sane person would! I suppose he uses a wheat head to cut corn off at the ground too,so he has no stalks to deal with next year?

Around here, the wheat itself was barely knee high. Most of it was even shorter. Really cut into a lot of guys straw contracts. When we were binding wheat, we were almost dragging the cutter bar on the ground to get enough of the straw to tie into bundles.

Here in NY they do cut grain pretty close to the ground. The straw is worth good money.

Vet,

The kids gotta understand, he can do that if he wants; lots of guys do it if they are after the straw.

Only thing is, he's got to slow the bugger down. Can only push so much stuff thru at a time. Creep time.

Allan

I saw several wheat fields that were freshly combined while traveling yesterday. The stubble in all of them appeared to be at least knee high. Like you said, a combine is not a mowing machine. Those old Massey 410s were nice machines, but they did have their limits.

The new combines are extremely nice to be in, but there is a reason that there is a special place in the cab specifically for the instruction manual, and that manual is about the size of a dictionary. If you haven't been in a new one for some time, you will be referring to the manual just to start the machine.
