OT: 'nother quick AC recharge question..

In the picture below, am I right in thinking that the service valve circled in red is the low-pressure port? And that the one in yellow is the high pressure port?

I want to make sure I have these right before I do anything else. The charging kit I purchased says that the can will burst if you hook up to the high side port!

As you can see, the yellow port is on a hose that runs from the compressor forward to the radiator area. The red one is on a hose that runs from the compressor back to the firewall area. I believe the red one is the low-side service valve where the r-134 should be added. Right?

Thanks to all of you for your help. The unit is now reading "full."

However, the AC itself isn't cold yet. There seems to be a problem with the compressor, as it kicks on and off every three seconds or so. I noticed the noise before but didn't realize until I got under the hood that it was the compressor.

Does this "kicking on and off" ring a bell with anyone? Could it be a blown fuse somewhere?

What says it's full?

That cycling compressor says it is still low of freon.

The compressor is supposed to cycle, yes. But, a rapid cycling off and on means it is low.

Put your left hand on top of that receiver-dryer. Fill it until it is too cold to hold your hand there.

Benedicite, gentlemen. I added another can of r-134 and the cycling stopped immediately. The pressure now reads a stable 40 lbs. and the air in the cab is darn-near cold.

I love days like today: this morning, I knew nothing about a AC system. Now I know where all the major components are, and I know how to recharge an empty system. Your help is much appreciated.

The kicking on and off is probably due to low freion levels in the system, tripping the low gas switch.

You are correct, in your picture the red circle is the low psi side.
If you have a vehicle with factory r134 fittings they will be 2 different sizes just for this purpose so you cant hook it up wrong.
Add freon on low side.

According to the first post, this is a 1991, which would be R-12. The R-12 fittings are 2 different sizes, to eliminate the possiblity of connection error, and when the adapters are installed for R-134, they are also different sizes, and the R-134 low side adapter fitting will only fit the R-12 low side Schrader port, so the chance for error is eliminated there, too.

(The fitting, near the compressor in the photo, is the HIGH SIDE port. The LOW side port is in the LARGER low side line, near the accumulator, back near the firewall.) Almost without exception, the smaller line will be HIGH SIDE, the larger line LOW SIDE.

Be smart, follow the rules, install the correct fittings, and then attach a label detailing what refrigerant has been installed, and what oil. This may well save a lot of grief later!

Hmmmm... Pat says the yellow is the low-side, while Allan says the red is the low-side.

Now I'm really scared to try this!

Hi Billy,

Yep, you got it. Low pressure back to the cab and high pressure out to the condenser.

Itchy2 has got it all turned around. One says yellow is low and the other says red is the low. I am sorry about the previous post. Just got the whole thing backwards. So which way is it????

the line going from the compressor to the firewall is the low side line. The line going from the compressor to the condenser in fromt of the radiator is the high pressure line. If this is a 134 system the fittings should be different anyway. Even most of the r12 systems had different fittings on the high and low sides.
