I have planted a dozen pecan trees in my pasture. I want to water them regularly but don't have a sprinkler system. I have been filling a 30 gal trash can with well water and using a bucket from the back of my truck. Is there any way that I could attach a hose to the lower portion of a 55 gal drum to and simply use the hose to water the trees?

If you want to use the garbage cans go to a marine store and get a Bilge Pump out let fitting. Put in the bottom side of the can with the outlet pointing out, they are for 3/4 hose.

I drilled a hole on the lower edge of a 55 gal drum and attached a water spigot from the hardware store. That way I can attach a hose and also control the water flow.

A small hole punched or drilled in some hose or bucket or barrel works well to water trees. You can also mix the powder soluable fertilizer in with it. In the past we just drilled holes in black plastic 1" hose but you can use smaller too. Where I have water pressure currently using the 5/8" black plastic hose and drip emitters but use the other emitters like 2 GPM or 4 GPM for soaker hoses in garden with emitters every 12-18" in the row just hooked to garden hose. I get those local from Submatic dealer close to here. When you put them on a pressurized line you can use a injection line on a Y strainer to mix in the fertilizer mix also. Some others also sell the T tape irrigation line you bury but I think it's kind of expensive.

On the emitters I meant GPH gallons per hour. They have them in 1,2, & 4 GPH.

Take 2 pieces of 4" pvc pipe about 3' long and bury them on each side of the tree and this way you always get water to the roots where it's needed the most .

what cowman said is the easiest. just lay the drum down and fill it up.
Why not find or build a small trailer to maybe put two drums on and use a soaker hose or make a watering hose for them, open the valve and let it seep

I take a 5 gal plastic bucket and drill 3 or 4 1/32 holes near the bottom and fill them up and it does a good job of watering the trees and you know how much the tree it getting. Takes about an hour for 5 gals to run out of the holes.

Why not just slip a garden hose in the top, and start a siphon?

Either submerge the whole hose and pull out one end with your thumb over it until it's lower than the water level...

Or what I used to do on our pool was suck on the hose "high" (standing up) with part of it on the ground -- when I felt the air pressure start to push due to the siphon starting, then I'd drop the end on the ground.

Sure. The small hole s 3/4 pipe thread. Then just get an adapter from pipe to hose thread.

A 3/4 faucet will fit the small hole in the drum. Lay the drum down. Fill through the large hole and hook a hose to the faucet in the small hole.
