'93 Escort probs- Part Deux

Back on now page five I had some help with a hard starting/low speed miss on a 1.9L 1993 Escort with an automatic. After following that advice(Thanks again Bradk and BLW!!) it continues to act up. Cleaned the MAF with electrical cleaner, new air filter, cleaned the grounds, cleaned the Idle Air Control valve, new plugs before. While running a Monitor test with my scan tool the engine was able to keep running, poorly, and then suddenly started smoothing out. Bradk suggested that a ground was not 'working' and the scanner provided one. Sooo, today I cleaned up as many as I could find but still no change. Would a coil pack going bad cause this? Above ~2000RPMs it runs fine.I continue to appreciate any help offered. Thanks!

Wellll, welll, and well. Because of the rough idle I haven't been able to hear the engine run from outside so today I was able to with my Dad keeping it running. After I turned it off he said it sounded like a vacuum leak. Checked the fuel pressure regulator hose and guess what, someone previously had "patched" the small hard plastic tube with a piece of rubber wiper hose that wasn't even close in size. Checked the PCV hose, it too had been "rigged" without any clamp or snug fit. TWO vacuum leaks!!!! ARRGGHHHHH HH!!! BUT, the codes went away!!!
Brad, sorry I missed the forest for the trees, my apologies! Thanks once more for your time and effort, it is much appreciated!!! I -hope- that this is the end of this headache!

Hi Esc,
What did the plugs look like when ya had them out?Black I'm guessing.Pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator & see if gas dribbles out.It shouldn't.
Also EGR valve may be stuck open,or maybe it's being commanded open due to a bad EGR position sensor.
Also I might suspect a bad coolant temp sensor,or an open in that circuit telling the ECM that the engine is -40*

Brad, the plugs didn't look "too" bad, just a little soot but not much. Before initially posting I checked the fuel pressure reg. and no gas came out. I can't find an egr on this non-Calif car, as I first thought. Would a coolant temp sensor make a code come up? I really appreciate your suggestions, thanks!

A bad coolant temp sensor may or may not set a code.
I just had a 94 Z-28 Camaro in the shop that needed one,and no code.It had alot of the symptoms you describe,with no code.Try jumping the two terms. together,or leaving it unplugged to see if it runs better either way.
The EGR valve is located at the rear of the engine next to the last intake runner pipe.It will have an electrical connector at the top(EGR position sensor),and a vacuum nipple at the valve itself.Try unplugging the EGR pos. sen. to see if it helps,and see if there's vacuum at valve(shouldn't be).

Bradk, well I unplugged the coolant temp sensor and no change, not even a code(like you said). I ran a monitor test and it showed the coolant temp rising. I also swapped out the IAC with a known good one with no change, even left it unplugged to get a code, still no code. I'm still getting a 542 "Secondary circuit failure control module to ground" code after cleaning the grounds, that's still got me wondering. I found out all non-Calif Escorts have no egr valve. The fuel pressure regulator was good also. PCV checked out. Next move is NEW plug wires and maybe a compression test, it runs too good above 2000 rpms though. Did a resistance check on the coil and it passed. I'll let you know what happens, thanks once more for your help!!

I was digging in some info I have and found a flow-chart for code #543.
The Ford chart asks if the vehicle has dual oxygen sensors.If it does,let me know.If it does not,it says replace PCM(computer).
Got a local junkyard around? ~brad

John and JTL, THANKS! I've found an Escort site but no answer yet. I can only hope that the seat isn't loose, it doesn't rattle but, who knows? IF I find out what the problem is I'll post the solution. Thanks again!

I missed the beginning of this thread due to beign out of town, but the Escorts of that age range ( I used to have a 93 myslef) are ntoed for valve seats comign loose in the head. Normally the exhaust seat closest to the waterpump. They will cause it to miss, maeka tapping noise, etc. all of which may be intemittent. Teh bad part is if ti sticks or breaks and the piston hits it.
