i use nod32. it is a profissional virus scan that seems to work better then norton an is cheaper. i went to renew my norton an they wanted 89 for a renewal. nod32 will cost ya 39 for a year. they have a free month trial. if you want to try it.

I just found out that the free AVG only stops about 80% ,and the AVG pro will find dozens of what the free verison had missed you get what you pay for .

I use the free version of Avast
and I really like it.
Avg is popular but I don't like the interface.
I dumped Norton a long time ago and don't regret it one bit.

If you have a virus you can't seem to get rid of,
try running one of the free online scans.
Such as HouseCall, or Symantec, or Panda.
HouseCall is my favorite one to use.
It's a good idea to run it periodically anyway,
to get a second opinion about viruses on your system.

I recommend you check out the link below at least
every 3 months to keep your computer in top running shape.
It's basically a list of maintenance procedures
to keep everything running smoothly.

I'm saying go with something else because Norton cheated me out of the last 6 months of updates I had and I'll never use them again because of that and their +**)&%*% poor customer service BS. Get rid of them. Others out there that won't tie as much up on your system.

I don't need any. I run Linux.

The only reason you need virus protection is that Microsoft has, until recently, put security dead last on their list of priorities. So Microsoft applications and operating systems are inherently insecure. This is mostly by design, although sloppy coding contributes to the problem.

I use the free version of AVG. It works much better than the Norton that cost me $60. Norton took up way too much space, made everything glitchy, and insisted on up-dating and running full system scans whenever it wanted to. Plus, I never had any kind of virus problem until I installed the Norton, then I was constantly being attacked. I finally realized that Norton itself IS the virus that you don't want.

Mornin' John,

Your question, while innocent enough I guess, just strikes me kind of funny. Or, maybe it's 'cause I fight this stuff day in and day out, I dunno.

But, why in the world would any rational individual broadcast out over the Internet what security measures they were using? :>)

Considering just about every new computer comes with,at least the few I have had, I fiqure its no big deal. My problem now is the renewal thing keeps popping up and I cant get rid of it. It was suggested to me by our computer geek at work that renewing Norton, or another virus protection program would/may stop it.Im currently running the AVG free, but iot has found 2 viruses that it cant get out.

JohnM, I may be wrong, but I think if you completely un-install all traces of the Norton, those virus's will go away. It seems to be Norton's way of convincing you that you need them.

I cant! Every time I try to uninstall it, I get a message about I have to have administrator access. Its really getting to me as just now when I turned on the computer, I had to wait about 30 seconds on the thing to let loose of my computer. I cant do anything until it gets done "Confirming My Susbcripiton".

I used to use McAfee then Norton BUT it let a baddddd d virus in once and COULD NOT delete it. I paid a few more bucks and switched to Computer Associates CA E Trust AND IT CLEANED THAT SAME VIRUS NORTON COULD NOT. I also run CA Firewall and Anti Virus and NoAdware plus the CA Anti Spyware plus use System Recovery and Norton Ghost and backup WITH NO PROBLEMS SINCE. I view Norton and McAfee as the cheap Yuppie garden variety product while the professionals and offices etc use the more advanced and BETTER products, but who can tell fer sure??

When I tried to renew Norton 2000 on-line, the version I downloaded wouldn't work with Win98, so I had to install a newer operating system to make use of an upgrade I had already paid 50 dollars for. Works fine now, though.

I use McAfee and have for the last 3 yrs or so. I've had no problems, but I assume the same could be said of Norton. Tim

I use Norton. Don"t renew online. Go to Your computer store and buy a new one. Renewing online costs an arm and a leg...new one gets you $40.00 in rebates!

Renewing online also means you don't get a hardcopy.

A virus can get into your AV and corrupt the passwords so that you cannot access your subscription updates. This happened to me once and Norton cheated me out of half of a year of subscription updates I'd paid for.

I switched to McAfee at that point, and stayed with them for two years.

My next AV will be either McAfee again or something else, but not Norton.
