A while back someone mentioned Guinea Fowl as an effective means of fly control. I have been thinking about this again because the flies have been bad this year and the rains seem to wash the Tempo right away.

Looking for your experiences and any additional info.

1) We are surrounded by several hundred acres of farm land. Maybe even 1000. Will they stray that far?

2) Will our dog just kill them or will they attack the dog?

3) Will they bite the 1 year old boy?

4) Will they cr@p in our pool?

5) Will they cr@p all over the lawn?

My parents had some geese for a while and I know they were a real freakin" nightmare, but I"m thinking about giving the guinea fowl a shot.

Thanks in advance.

Joe in Maryland.

I have also been considering these...but I have two questions---where do they stay/crap in the winter, and what do they eat in the winter?
Oh and one more....will my Lab spend his days chasing them?

They will cr@p wherever they are when they have to cr@p as most animals do, and they are very messy. Each dog is different, don't know your dogs habits!! They are very good for tick control I am told by a friend of mine who has some and also probably a better guard dog to warn you when someone comes up than you own now!! Good luck if you get some.

We have 16 guinea keets in our basement right now.2 nd. batch, still have 3 7 yr olds from the 1 st. They are a wild African game bird, but the more you handle them as keets the more social they will become. They stay in a roughlly 500 yds radius or the house & go in the coop @ nite. Dry litter, makes good lawn fert. We've taught 2 dogs to be "nice" but have watched them harass both dogs and even chase deer in the yard, very loud when something arrives that's new or different. They'll eat off the ground all day, anything & everything, only stopping for dust baths. If you let them make a nest out of the coop, they will lay 25-30 eggs then try to set on it, that's when predator will get them. I've had guinea fowl last year for the exact purposes you're suggesting.

They are good buggers. So are muscovy ducks. I'm not so sure how good guineas are on flies. I always saw them snapping down low. Even up close, I never saw the bug they snapped at. The muscovies would hunt higher in the air, and I frequently saw the bugs they were going after.

If you don't cage them so they learn where home is, they just take off when you let them out. As for roaming, mine would go out the better part of a mile.

Contrary to the strange comments given, they get taken quite frequently by predators, including dogs. Especially at night. While chickens turn off when the sun goes down, guinneas lose their minds and go completely insane.

Where they go, they poop. And they will go into your lawn. If it's fenced, they will fly over the fence into your lawn, and then scream along the fence waiting for you to open the gate to let them back out.

They will not attack dogs children or other things. They are more feral than domestic, and as such are quite skittish. They are combative only with other poultry, and that's not that common really.

Don't discount the noise. The din they make is incredible. When I slaughtered mine in the fall the volume of silence that decended was incredible. For that reason, and only that reason, I chose not to do guineas again.

We tried them for several years here in central New York. Loved having them around and listening to their constant chatter. We raise goats and had a land-snail problem (the snails are a host for liver-flukes in goats). The Guinea Hens worked great for that - ate all the snails, bugs, and whatever around. Even picked beetles out of the garden without hurting anything. But - we gave up trying to keep them. At least with the hens we had - they all tended to leave, one by one - until there was ONLY one left. They'd wander out into the fields and woods, and we'd never see them alive again. I did though, find feather-piles in the woods where some fox, coyote, coon, etc. killed them. When all would be gone except one - all was okay - and the last one was content to stay at the farm. This happened a few times - we'd get down to one - and that one would live with the chickens and goats and sleep in the barn at night. But -eventually - a coon or something would finish the job. Our very last bird stayed here two years. One day we found it with one leg gone - obviously she'd been attacked. She survived and got along pretty good on one leg. Then one morning - all we found was feathers. We also had a few killed along the way by "friendly" dogs. Never had a dog kill one of our chickens, but for some reason - they go after the Guineau Hens - maybe because they don't scatter and run like chickens? As far as hurting little kids? I've always had kids around and the Guineau Hens were always fine. I can't say the same for a few Rhode Island Red roosters we had. And - messing up your yard? Well, what goes in, must come out somewhere. It was the least of our worries around here. I had one other problem with the hens. They loved foam-insulation. If you have any buildings that have it anywhere their beaks will reach - they'll pick at it until it's gone.

You won't regret getting a few guinea fowl for your place. They are independent as hell and will pretty much keep to themselves. About the only thing that will get them is a great horned owl that grabs them off their roost in the trees. They are the best tick killers since DDT! We love our little guineas. They are like feathered outdoor cats..... .but they don't kill birds or bring dead presents to you. Jerry

they won't cr@ap in your pool, and for the most part the will stay out of your yard.. also they are great on ticks.. they won't bother your kid.. bet $100 that he could not get within 15 feet of them.. and a dog catch them? not a chance after they can fly.. I have around 30 of them.. hardly ever see them.. only seen three ticks this year.. so I would say GO FOR IT! you will never be sorry..

And they eat ticks too!! If the dog or any thing else threatens them they'll fly into a tree and raise a ruckus.

Joe; Well, life is like that. First they will eat the flys, then they will crap on your lawn. Doubt if any will get into your pool. Keep the dog off them and if the boy dont chase them he should be ok. Geese will chase a person, never heard of Guina'a doing more than raising a ruckus. Bob

Guinea birds will harrass, kill and eat other farm animals they can take down e.g. chickens/turkeys. I just seen a disapointed farmer two weeks ago. His Border Collie just came trotting into the yard carrying the last of his six recently purchased 2-3 month old Guineas. Dog got another "tune-up" on the spot but that along with the other five "tune-ups" didn't stop the dog from killing another Guinea afterwards. He should have tied the 1st dead Guinea around the dog's neck for 10 days.

10-4 on the Guinea coller. Used to have a dumb dog that was an egg sucker. Once he was cured of that (cayenne pepper inside most eggs in the nest box) he developed a grudge against the chickens I guess.

Started killing the chickens. Caught him in the act one day and gave him a "tune up" and a chicken collar. He wore that thing till it dam near rotted off of him. Cured him of that.

Later that fall he got hit on the road. Nice dog, just dumb.

We had some when I was growing up, they make good watch dogs, that is they go to pot-racking, (that is what the noise they make, sounds like, pot-rack, pot-rack) any time anything new or different comes around, even people that live there, if they go and come back from town, the birds set up a racket. No, the won't wonder that far or if they do, they will come back, No, a dog can't catch them, No, they wont bite dog or baby, they are not social animals and will not come close to any other animal or human. I don't think they will crap in pool, if they have a water source elsewhere, as for the yard they range to far and wide for that to be a problem. They roost up high and once they find a roost they like they will use it from now on. In short they are nothing like geese.
