I'm looking buying at a cub cadet tractor with a 10hp kohler engine. The guys selling it because it won't run right. Says I will run good for 15min or so and then loses power and backfires. What would cause this? Thanks. Mike.s

I had a Tecumseh engine do that and I finally cured it with a new spark plug.

I had one of those and can tell you it is probably a worn out exhaust valve. The seat will be perfect because it is hard but the valve will be burned. You can buy a regular one for about $15 bucks or a stellite one for about $30 I think. It has been a while. I put a new piston in mine and bored it .010 over since I had it apart to change the valve. That is a JEWEL of the kohler line of motors. I have used 12,14, and 16 horse kohlers and the 10 horse is by far the smoothest and best running of them all. Kind of like a 327 chevy kind of way. It has a short stroke and smaller bore and is balanced much better than its big brothers. Mine was a 1000 model with a manual trans and it ran a 44 inch mower deck very well once I got the new valve in place and motor rebuilt. Do a compression test. It will more than likely be low. Good luck. It will be a great runner.

The older cast iron Kohler engines were prone to doing these antics also if the valve clearance is not maintained.

The old cast-iron Kohler 10-12 hp engines are tough, but they sometimes develop a problem with a sticking exaust valve. The engine will respond just as you describe, then refuse to re-start until it cools off. Replacing the exhaust valve cured the problem on my 12 hp Wheelhorse.

My guess is it needs an overhaul.....the valve seats are bad letting her fire out the exhast.....hot spot, the cyl. is egg shaped toward the exhaust.....

Go down to GARDEN TRACTORS and post your question.....those guys have forgot more about that Kohler than Ill ever know..... Don
