I haven"t tried a B but my experience with M"s,A"s, and a very strange G (with a 120" Italian made belly mower) sez that big green two cylender tractors DON"T make very good lawn mowers. They will plow, disc, harrow, cultivate, and run a thresher all day long. They will also plow your lawn whether you want it plowed or not.All that nice ground clearance will test your pucker power if that lawn ain"t so level as you think.
The G was purchased by my (then) employer back in the "70 s at a military surplus auction and had been outfitted for grass field air port maintainance. It would cut some grass!!!! as long as the ground was LEVEL.

The Woods belly mount mowers work great.

I hope that is a factory 800 series hitch for that $500

The next problem is going to be all the rutts it leaves in the yard ?

I think you have plenty of HP if running right because I have used a 7 1/2 foot flail mower behind one of those before and got along ok until grass was really tall.

Paul. First of all, although its a more common and readily available n easy to mount up finish mower, YOU DONT NECESSARILY need to spend $500 on that 3 pt hitch and could instead spend it on a better mower that could be a "pull type" that attaches to the drawbar and is PTO driven. You can even get them with their own engine that sits right on top BUTTTTT TT the pull type has disadvantages compared to a 3 pt mounted as far as backing up or tight turns etc etc plus more wheel tracks left behind (would be my LAST choice).

If the lawn is big n rectangular and theres not many trees etc to maneuver around, then the pull type wouldnt be bad to operate and you needent spend $500 for the 3 pt hitch BUTTTTT if theres lots of tight turns and objects to mow around and its an oddball shaped yard,,,,, then a 3 pt mounted mower or a belly mount would be easier to use.

NEXT consideration is its size. I like them to be wide enough to mow out the wheel tracks but that means you need at least a 6ft maybe even wider mower (depends on where wheels are set). OKAY if its ONLY finish grass yard mowing and NOT brush hogging and the blades are kept sharp, a B can likely have the HP do the job buttttt ttt if its heavy tall or wet grass then that could work a B to death lol

NEXT they make a lot of belly mount mowers (Woods n others) that can be rigged on that B like so many IHC Cub n B n A farmers used. YOu gotta have all the correct bars n brackets n chains and the big pulley that fits on your PTO shaft to mount it all up. Buttttt ttt those are more common for the little IHC's then that B and it may be hard to get the mower n all the mounts n pulley BUTTTTT a better thing about them belly mounts is they mow BEFORE the rear wheels n leave less tracks n a better looking lawn. Bottom line, a Belly Mount leaves a better lookin lawn (less rear tire tracks),,,,, ,maneuvers like n even better then a rear 3 pt,,,,, , but may be harder (if a used) to locate n rig up then a simpler rear 3 pt mounted mower.

NEXT the disadvanatge of that B is no live PTO but you can still get by.

I GUESS IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS and intened to keep n use it as a finish mower, I would opt NOT to spend $500 for a 3 pt hitch but instead invest in a good Belly Mount mower around 6 ft width 3 blade (Woods makes good ones) cuz that gets you the maneuverability (much easier to use then pull type),,,,, ,,,,does a better job cuz it mows before the rear wheels,,,,, , and plain old looks better lol

So you gotta either spend $500 for the 3 pt PLUS buy a good 6 ft 3 pt mower (prob most common n easier to find) or go the Belly Mower route or get a Pull Type it looks like, its your money n your choice, hope this helps you decide, but the belly mount is easy to get around and will leave a nice yard n less wheel tracks. The B ought to handle a 6 ft fine if its simply grass mowing

Let us know, best wishes n God Bless

John T

There are lots of Farmall Hs out there equipped with Woods belly mowers and they work great. I have one myself, and wouldn't be without it. The Woods mowers are very universal, most likely there is a mounting kit to fit your John Deere B.

When I was a kid we had a set up like you are talking about. 52' B with a 60" woods finish mower. It was not a very ideal set-up but it can be done. I'd recomend a finish mower that is around 84-90" for that tractor. Anything smaller and you can't even cover your tracks. I have a used aftermarket 3-point hitch that came off of our 52' B when we moved up to newer tractors. Hardly ever used it as the old B's hydraulics wouldn't lift just a heck of a lot. I'd sell it if you are interested?

Luke,
Will the B have enough HP to run a mower that size? Why wasn"t it ideal? Do you know anyone I can call to discuss this with? Sorry so many questions but I am having trouble getting this thing figured out.

I am in the process of purchasing a 3 pt hitch from alocal farmer. He wants $500. What do you think.
Thanks

It wasn't ideal for me because I think it was too heavy and clumsy of a tractor to mow grass with. No live pto was another thing I didn't like. But I am spoiled with newer tractors. I think you can pull an 84" mower with that tractor no problem as long as you are just cutting grass and not using it as a brush hog. The belly mower may be a better option I would think.
