I can't believe we are getting flooded in Michigan right now with the hardest rainstorm I have ever had to drive in. I don't even have the heart to look at our fields in the morning. It will be a disaster, unless soybeans can live underwater but I am pretty sure they can't. Sure does test your faith after all the hard work and probably the some of the best beans we ever had started. This is one of those nights when I am seriously regretting ever attempting farming. I know I could be a lot better off financially if I turned my back on it and walked away. Not to mention the power was out again when I got home from work. This is the third time in about 6 months it has been out. I am seriously considering a large sale, apartment in town in a better economy and in a state other than Michigan. There has to be a better place to live than around here. Too much rain, not enough rain, too hot, too cold. Never any balance at all. I am sure the people in Louisiana have it much worse but this state is ridiculous to try to farm in. I have seen us get a rain like this and then go right into a drought afterwards. I think they said 90 plus degrees tomorrow with high humidity too. I feel just as bad for the people whith the droughts too because that will drive you crazy too. They say in a drought you will go hungry but in a flood you will starve. Lots of guys have wheat around here that just got ripe this week and may be a big problem now. A lot of it may be knocked down. I think I will just avoid our wet farm for a while and go down there in about a month and see what is left! 5 inches of rain and still coming down out there. Later people.

Thanks for the encouragement people. It was pretty bad this morning but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Our tiled ground got hit the hardest and had a lot of standing water but a few small ditches dug out of the field to the bigger ditches took care of a lot of it fast. Our low ground without tile was not as bad because it must not have got as much rain. It rained 5 inches at the farm where I live and maybe only 3 inches 2 miles down the road at the other farm I was worried about. I was just in an overall bad mood last night when I posted that. Not a lot of sleep, bad night at work and came home to no electricity, no shower, and flooded fields with rain coming down in buckets, and to top it off the roof was leaking from the sideways driven rain went into an attic window and got a lot of important papers wet on my kitchen table. What a difference a day can make. Not whining, just venting. As far as making it in farming, dad has been at it for 50 years and I have been for about 25 so I guess we have technically "made" it! We are in the middle of michigan just north of St Johns. Gratiot county. I try to never lose track of my blessings though because I saw the mess they have had in New York and Pennsylvania and am glad I was not in their shoes. Later people.

I'm glad things are looking better for you now. The rain over all, did a LOT of good for our crops.

WOW, what a whiner, you probable won't make it as a farmer if that rain got to you that much. In a few days it will be gone, and the crops will be better off for it!!

I don't know where you live but we did not get much rain here in Livingston County. Michigans moderate climate is a blessing. How would you like to be down in the southern plains were it is 90 or 100 every day and no rain for months? That never happens in Michigan - I'll take it.

Live in south central Mn. and didn't get any. The last rain was 3 weeks ago and that was .5 only. The corn is tasseling and could use some rain. Now hot weather predicted for another week with no rain. We have heavy black soil and the humidity is up so we should be able to hold on----but back in '88 it didn't and not much yield. Cutting the second cutting of alfalfa now, and it is very good. Had a good first cutting also, so the beef cows will eat this winter.

Where you at. I live in S.W. corner and we didn't even get a 1/2 out of that. been that way all year. went up to Holland the other day and at least they got sand so you can dig if you want but by us there is clay so hard when you try watering the plants in the yard it wont even soak in.

Where in Michigan are you at? I am 15 miles SE of Flint. As far as the bean fields go could you dig a drainage ditch, small one anyway. There are two fields of corn near me, about 80 acres total and there is real good run off to a creek about 1/4 mile away, the corn there grows good and never floods out.

Nothing up here in Northern MN. Never seen it like this. My ponds are about gone. Ground cracking and even the wetland grass is browning out. Know any new steps to the rain dance?? lol Bob
