This is off topic but have any of you folks noticed an abundance of ticks this year. Most years I only get two or three of all 4 of my dogs, this year I bet I have pulled 15 to 20 so far. Not to mentions my boys and me finding them on us. Hell just itchen thinkin bout it now.

Hello,
I saw this and I agree. This is a bad year for ticks. BEWARE ticks carry many types of diseases. My wife has Lyme disease. We live in North Carolina where the sorry medical society says that there is no Lyme disease here. This has been a long process for us and we wnt to NY to get a diagnosis. This is a bad disease and will put you down for a long time. If you notice any sickness after being bitten by a tick find a Lyme doctor and get seen.

Devin

My wife rides horses in the mountains a lot, with her dogs- the dogs get a lot of ticks. She found the neatest gizmo to remove them- looks like a plastic one-teaspoon kitchen measuring spoon, with a slot with beveled sides cut into it. Removes them slick as can be, and never leaves any part of the tick in the critter (every one I've removed was still alive and kickin' after removal). At Pet Smart, and other pet stores- called Tick Off.

They are bad here in Alabama this year. In fact I just finished up treatment for a bacterial infection that the Doctor thinks was due to a tick bite. The symptoms were a close match to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, but there are about 5 different things that you can get from ticks -- all of them very unpleasant. The CDC web site has a lot of info.

I have started treating my work clothes with Permanone (aka permethrin) and I haven't found any more ticks on me.

Rick

Yep ticks are bad this year. The mild winters of late haven't help any thing in that way and if we keep getting mild winters they will keep getting worse.

It won't get rid of the ticks, but got to your Vet and for about $15 get a little tube of stuff to put on your dogs back he won't have any fleas or ticks for a few weeks.

I have been doing some controlled burns on my property the past few years. Each spring I have been burning the dead grass and weeds off. Since I started doing this I have noticed WAY fewer ticks on myself and my dogs. I think the burning is killing them off, destroying their eggs, something about that burning is gettin 'em. The year before I started doing this I could not go our without coming back with at least 6 ticks on me and 6 more on each dog.

I've noticed more the last several years. Don't know why. Maybe all the publicity about Lyme disease has made me look harder. The ticks we find are the big wood ticks. Some people say only the very small deer ticks carry Lyme disease but our vet says that may not be true and other ticks may carry the disease also.

Ticks, deerflies, skeeters seem to vary a lot from year to year. This year all been fairly mild for us.
Horse flies bothering the dog a lot, though.

Same here in MN, guess it goes with the hot and dry. Wait, they were bad when we were getting the spring rains. Well, they have been pretty bad here for the last 2 or 3 years. This year the worst is the little green weevil. Thousand's of them. Bob
