Japanese beetle larvae can be successfully eradicated with milky spores. That way, you won't have any beetles. It only has to be applied once. There is probably a ton of info on the internet about this.

Best thing I have found is "LIQUID SEVEN" by the time you spray a large bush, they are starting to fall to the ground....been using it for years....best thing to do is start spraying last week of June on into July after each rain....
(here in southern Ohio)

They hit flowering bushes and trees.....even if they are not in bloom.....they love roses.....

Convince your neighbors to get the traps. When I took entomology in college, my professor was a colleague of the guy that invented the Japanese Beetle Trap. When he talked about beetle control, he said the traps were one of the worst things to get (and he supposedly had money in the company). They use a phermone (scent attractent) to lure the beetles to the trap. You will be getting your beetles and be bringing in more beetles from other properties adn will end up with more beetles than you started with. The bags fill up quick, but do not keep up with the onslaught of beetles. If you use to bags, put them as far away as possible from the plants you want to protect, the beetles will find them.

I do believe that you're correct about traps attracting beetles from a gazillion miles away. I know of a fella that's the grounds keeper/maintenance guy for a place that sprawls over a few acres or so. I'll bet he has a good 50 traps, can empty them daily, and the next morning they're nearly busting the seams. I've seen beetles, but nothing like that...year after year. If I were him, I think I'd cut that out.

This past weekend was working the race in Joliet, and noticed something too. Year after year, if go up to the roof where the camera guys setup, get dive bombed by them beetles. Same thing every year, but once get down by the track or ground levels, there aren't so many. Must be something about them Sony cameras or camera guys that turns them beetles into kamikazie pilots.
