Hi All,
I posted this before, but the solutions I got unfortuantely didn't work for me. However, I think I can better describe the situation now.

I "inherited" an old Owatonna swather. I know it was working the year before I got it. It has a make-shift hookup. One cable goes from the battery to what I assume is the solenoid. The other seems grounded ok. There is no key, just a toggle switch. I tried to use a third cable to attach the battery's positive terminal with the toggle connection. I tried both connections of the toggle with no luck (although I must say that this made total sence to me when forum members suggested it). I can't use a screwdriver to start it as the solenoid is surrounded by many moving belts, etc.

Does anyone else have any idea how I can hookup/start this thing??

The three Owatonna swathers we have use a push-button starter switch and a toggle for ignition mounted on control panels on engines.~brad

Is it a small Ford type solinoid whitch can be mounted almost anywhere.if so it should have apositive battery cable bolted to one side and cable to starter bolted on other side. a small guage wire attached to small conection on sol. then to strter button or spring loaded toggle switch. Does it have a magneto ?

Take another look. Maybe there is no solenoid, it might have a very large pushbutton on the engine or somewhere near it. A lot of the Wisonsin engines were set up this way..the pushbutton takes the place of the solenoid.
You didn't say what the engine was.

not familar with Owatona setup, but normal connections for solenoid to start engien would be a hot lead to + side of battery, and a ground to negative side of battery. The switch would either go form + side of battery to a third lead on solenoid, or form ground to third lead of solenoid, dependign on type solenoid. Note, you need 2 switches with this set up. One to operate the starting solenoid, and a seperate one for ignition, unless you have a key swithc that performs both functions. Another possibility is a push to start button mounted on the contorl panel somewhenre.
