I have been seeing a lot of worms around the top of my corn plants. They eat the center stem, and the top falls off. I haven't seen worms this bad before. I guess next they will be on the ears. What is the best way to get rid of these things. Thanks Stan

Are you tallking about a field of corn or just "garden" corn? A quick internet search suggested the following:

Corn Borer Control: Shred and plow under cornstalks in or near fields where borers overwinter. This should be done in fall or early spring, before the adults emerge. Use pheromone traps to determine main flight period for moths, then release trichogramma wasps to destroy eggs. Beneficial insects, such as ladybugs and lacewing, will consume a large number of borer eggs. Spray Dipel Dust (Bt-kurstaki) or Monterey Garden Insect Spray (spinosad) to kill young caterpillars. Repeat applications every 4-5 days until tassels turn brown. Use botanical insecticides only as a last resort.

Note: Ladybugs will consume almost 60 borer eggs a day. Stink bugs, damsel bugs, spiders and hover fly larvae feed on young caterpillars.

I'm not sure Tempo is actually registered as a product for use in commercial corn production, and I'm pretty certain it is not registered for use over the top of edible vegetable production-you did not mention if your corn was sweet corn, or field corn. Even if Tempo carrys a label, the price is so high it would not be feasible compared to other products on the market. One plus side of Tempo is that it is extremely safe for use as labeled in and around buildings/houses as a insecticide to knock down beetles, crickets, and spiders.

If you are loosing alot of the tassels, it might be Corn borer. Your chances of killing these lie best with an commercial product. I suggest you contact a local agronomist or crop protection specialist and have them look at the field to determine you infestation level. You will need to go through a chem dealer any way as many of the products are restricted use. Also few people have a high clearance sprayer just sitting in the back yard ready to spray over the top of tall corn.

As far as insecticide goes there is a product called Tempo SC (I think the SC stands for Super concentrate) I know that this product will kill just about any bug out there. Tractor supply may sell it but a company in Florida called Professional pest control products is where I bought Tempo SC from. They are in Pensocola FL. With shipping a 1/2 pint was $50 or so.
